Around 306 million PC and laptop sales in 2009, worldwide, according to my Google search. Windows 7's been available to order for almost a year. I honestly thought the figure would be higher than 150 million.
Granted, it wasn't available off the shelf until October but the pre-order push started in July. I recall PCs were being pushed with free upgrades back then too.
Considering the number of new PC/laptop units shifted in a year, it still seems low as that doesn't take into account user/business upgrades, etc.
I reckon the price for the OS is worth it.
Divide the price by the amount of days you uses the PC in a year... which is probably all of it and works out like 29p a day. You sometimes pay more than that alone for Pet insurance.
Windows 7 also makes using a PC easier. My other half was not too good on a PC, but with windows 7 she's actually learnt how to use it very quickly and is always on my PC checking her gmail account and stuff like that
I preordered my windows7home and am very glad I did, one of the best £50 I've spent.
I use it on my media PC under the telly and apart from the odd foible it's been great, runs fairly smoothly and looks nice and pretty on the 55" 1080p telly.
Not sure I'd like to pay £80 which is what it seems now, but £50 was well worth it.

I am glad I payed for my software as someone who earns their living from computers, I respect the right of other people to make a living to. Be it software or hardware, pay for software or opensource. How they do it is up to them, and i have no right to try to deny them that living. It really annoys me when people tell me how MS office is the best or they must use photoshop however when it comes down to it they don't want to pay saying it is too expensive! So don't use it and use something else that is of a price you are willing to spend. I will be happy when no one uses unlicensed software... Just so you know I think opensource is the best for all but the most niche of software.
EDIT:
I bought Windows 7 Ultimate, so I can help what ever version people have as I can access all the features.

woop! student offer £30 bargain
I think everyone agrees that microsoft have outdone themselves with Win 7, both with pricing and quality. I was happy to buy multiple copies of Win 7 HP after using the beta.
Another happy customer I also got it for £45.
£45 for software I use everyday... amazing value.
