That depends on what they're clued-up about, and on their priorities.
Perhaps those a little more clued up on privacy would select something else, like Firefox, partly because it supports the DoNotTrack headers and initiatives, which Chrome still does not (though Google have announced it is to do so). And perhaps they would select something else, like Firefox, because regardless of the above, the biggest risk of getting your personal browsing activity, and interests, databased and data-mined, and perhaps even sold on or used for targeting advertising, is if you use a product made by a company whose entire business model is based on doing exactly that .... like Google.
Regardless of whether Google or Chrome is "better" as a browser, regardless of speed, footprint, standards compliance and so on, and regardless of whether users a PC-clued-up, they may still choose to use something else precisely because Chrome = Google, and FF does not.
Or they may not. It's a personal choice. Some people either don't know or don't care. Hell, some people apparently like loads of junk-mail through the letter box. It's a strange world. Personally, unsolicited junkmail makes me feel more inclined towards strangling the sender than buying something from them, and it downright counter-productive if getting sales was their objective, as presumably it was. And yes, that means I don't, and won't, use Chrome, no matter how good it is or isn't. The relative technical merits of Chrome v others isn't an issue that matters to me.
I use adblock in FF to remove adverts before watching Videos on YouTube. Adblock in Chrome cannot do that because Google won't let them. Guess which browser I use.
Opera?
Actually I do kind of get the whole "don't wanna use Chrome because it's google thing" - I was very wary of it when it first came out because it installed itself into appdata to avoid UAC (dodgy or what) and Google haven't had the best history of privacy. For whatever reason I don't really experience problems with Opera (even with the sites mentioned - facebook works OK for me) so i've stuck with it. I think on the speed side I don't really see any tangible difference between them all now - FF isn't as horrible as it was a year or so back and Opera keeps moving forward quite well too (I'm actually using Opera Next (12.00) on Win 8 at work) to the point where there's little real advantage in me moving. I've put Chrome on today to give it a spin and am busy trying to dig up all the relevant addons to put back the stuff I like in Opera (Speed dial etc). I don't really mind IE much now - it's pretty good - but still has plenty of standard opera features missing from it to keep me away from it as my main browser.
Not enough people use opera, it is intuitive, unfriendly fast, and had many useful features. Not that it can be argued for in a battle against one of the worlds greatest internet pioneers.
I've just noticed... Chrome is still installing in appdata! Cheeky sods.
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
Sorry that's pants.
It offends my developer side though - sidestepping UAC and (presumably) other security policies to spread itself about.
Whilst i'm glad to see you can rectify it, most aren't going to..
Not finding it quicker so far (versus Opera 12.00) and the scrolling seems clunky too..
Correct, but personally I can't see Google pulling funding soon because sponsoring Firefox is a win for them. Remember that it (FF) will appeal to those people who are Chrome-refuseniks, either for privacy issues or technical ones (see below).
It's also a second string for Google's bow - namely getting those darned adverts in front of you (although like a lot of people here, I'm a big fan of AdBlock+ and NoScript on FF!)
Lastly, it also acts as good ammunition against those who claim that Google is trying to "own" the Internet.
Know if anyone's reported this as a bug/bad-feature to Google? I've got to say that effectively insisting on having to install Chrome for each user individually is a complete piece of nonsense. imho of course. Certainly doesn't make any sense if you're talking about a shared PC like a family one.
Actually I quite like Opera, I use it less than Chrome and FF on the desktop, but on Android (phone and tablet) it's easily as good as other browsers. Although I have come across the odd page where Chrome would render it and Opera would just show a blank page. I must track one of those down some day and report it ...
Ill try Opera next dangel as the standard opera seems slower than IE and Chrome , scrolling is excellent on Opera though!. One massive problem ive noticed on Opera, apparently lacks HTML 5.0 full implementation? Tried watching a 3d video on youtube and told my browser wasnt HTML 5.0 compliant! Worked fine on every other browser, and still video seems choppy.
I think Google do this due to using Click once for deployment (its the only place I think click once can write to). I could be wrong of course but I'm pretty sure we had the same problem when we used click once. By using click once it allows google to install chrome with just a click from within IE. Not sure I blame them for doing that as it makes it far simpler for end users to install.
Could be that it detects Opera and tells you that - got a linky that I can try? Faking the identity might fool it. I think HTML 5.0 isn't yet ratified is it? Next is a 'alpha' build just so you're aware but they're close to a RC build now and it seems (mostly) OK for me.
Trust me, it's not in your benefit to have exe's running from appdata! It's lardy, less secure and completely ignores developer guidelines for Windows. If I did it in my software i'd be drowning under hate (e)mail.
Nothing wrong with a simple installer and everybody else manages just fine (including firefox, opera and even IE) that way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CZX8...ature=youtu.be only activated 3d for a chuckle , didnt work came up with an error (might just be me?).
edit: Yup just tried it with Opera next and it works fine no issues, apparently they added more support for html 5.0 .
