    DDR3 mobo
    i5 processor of some sort
    16GB minimum of RAM.
A new case and power supply.

Everything else can be moved across from my existing system.

An upgrade not a sidegrade would be nice

So, needs to have better performance than a HD4870 which - tbh - handles everything I throw at it with aplomb. Obviously it's for playing games too, but I'm working through my Steam back catalogue before I buy new stuff - latest love is Borderlands 2, but that's not particularly taxing (I can run it on a four year old Macbook windowed without any real problems).

I'm out of the loop entirely on this, but I would assume that the current mid range Nvidia cards will be reasonable?

Otherwise I don't think I need anything except more space on the desktop (already at 5TB) or possibly cloning my Windows drive to a 256GB SSD.
    GTX 660 is decent.

256MB+ SSD for my app storage partition. The OS has been on a (small!) SSD since day 1, but I'd like to see the boost for app loading speeds that an SSD move would give. I'll probably end up giving Samsung a chunk of change for whatever 800 series SSD is on special at Scan at the time.
A new graphics card would be nice too, but I don't think the budget will stretch to that. And definitely no Windows 8 for me.

What wouldn't I upgrade given the cash! Hopefully if house sale happens soon I'll get an i5 combo with a 7850(/8850?) after we move. About the only item not needing an upgrade is the case (I have no USB3 devices to justify it!) and PSU (Just replaced it after old one fried itselfs).

I think I've made my 775 system last as long as I can even if little of the original components remian considering I built it for uni and graduated over two years ago it's had a fine run!

Haswell seems like a good opportunity to build something from scratch.

    Hopefully a new graphics card.

Just need nVidia to stop charging 2-3 times what the hardware is worth like they have done with the 600 series.

Re: Features - QOTW: New year, new upgrades. What's on your shortlist?

A 200Gb+ SSD, maybe an upgrade to i5 3570. But probably just the SSD.

Having a Laptop with an i7 and a Nexus 7, the upstairs computer doesn't really get much use, so it would be a bit of a waste...

Got a replacement motherboard for my 3570k coming tomorrow - ordered an i5 and z77 itx motherboard, and the board arrived with bent pins! Also hoping to get a 2gb 7850 (probably the MSI one with their performance cooler), then I'll be done for a few years.

I'm gunning for an Intel Core i7-3770K and ASUS Z77 SABERTOOTH motherboard. I also want 8GB Corsair Dominator RAM @ 1600Mhz instead of using my Corsair XMS3 1333Mhz. Going to give my old system parts to my older brother while I enjoy my $2000 system

Hopefully a new pc if I can afford it. my current system with Q6600 is showing age now. I have done some upgrades over the years. Started with 2gb of ram with 8800gt and now it has 6gb of ram and 6870.

The hardware is worth whatever people will pay for it.
If you don't think Nvidia is good value for money then buy AMD. Nvidia aren't going to lower prices while people are still happy to buy their products.

I imagine your 580 SLI isn't exactly slow though
