I'll keep my (at this rate) ancient i5 2500K .. thx.
I'm willing to bet the next tick-tock cycle will be yet another incompatible socket because of DDR4 or something.. (1156/1366 all over again?)
Yeah I'll be upgrading my light laptop though mainly to get one with a decent GPU and haswell just happens to be tagging along.
expensive
I am still on a C2Q Q9650 @ 3.85 its ok but my motherboard is struggling, so an upgrade is required.
So yes.
I hate to break it to you but the 2500k never became cheap after Ivy was launched and I don't see Ivy going cheap after Haswell:

In fact the 2500k is currently the most expensive it has ever been.
Nope. It isn't a viable upgrade for Sandy Bridge, in my opinion.
I know it can hit higher scores at lower clocks and reduced power usage, but it isn't sexy enough to justify buying a new board too. I'd imagine a lot more people would consider it, if it was socket compatible with SB/IB.
I concur. As a replacement for a pre-Nehalem rig it's a no brainer, but the benefits over more recent architecture are not clear enough for most of us to worry just yet.
Possibly, depending if the midrange desktop chips can run stable passively cooled. Might sit tight in the meantime and see what the i3s look like - my needs are fairly low end really.
Well I've got an Intel i7-3770K 3.40Ghz and I'm not really sure whether that would be an upgrade or not.
Any suggestions?
No, not worth it.
I take it your 3770K isn't really at stock?
I'm using my amd phenom II 965 x4 so I might change if I can save up the money to get a motherboard and a processor but I think I wont get the money any time soon.
got a sandy bridge i5-2500 2 years ago and its going to be a fair few years yet before i need to upgrade. Upgraded my graphics cards to GTX 670s when they came out, first upgrade in 2 years, and I reckon they'll hold me for at least another 2-3 years (i game on a TV so its 1080p, will only need to upgrade when the hardware doesn't support new games).
