It would certainly mitigate the problem of not having enough GPU grunt to play games at decent frame-rates. Play at 1080p now, & then step up to 4k once affordable GPUs are able to cope

I do wonder about the scaling issues though...it might be a case pressing one's nose up against the screen to read text!

That's my concern too. Properly done, it should be a dream, but my experience with scaling in Windows previously has been really, really miserable.

The comments in this review of the Asus 4K monitor are interesting - it seems that some applications scale better than others. I'm sure scaling support will improve over time, but at the moment it's a bit patchy...

Dell have published a press release about its upcoming 4K monitors:

    http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/usco...09188680294295

The most interesting for me is the 28" model at under $1000! Can't wait for a review!

That seems insanely cheap to me - the only other one I've seen so far was more like £3,000!
The reason is the size. at 24' 4k is massive pixel overkill and would be wasted. so it is very cheap in one hand but a massive waste of money on the other.

And also it is a good sign that more and more 4K's are being released as they will come down in price

Yeah, I think that might be a real winner. Will be interesting to see how the pricing develops in the UK.

Re: News - Dell announces new 24-inch UltraSharp Ultra HD monitor

Coming in late on the whole 4k thing - I cant help but wonder how it got to be called 4k, as the res is neither 4000 lines nor 4000 overall pixels ?

Res is 3840 x 2160, so surely it should be called 2k. Full HD isnt 1920 is it ? Its 1080.

Indeed, whilst I'd not buy a Dell PC, I've been rocking the excellent 3008WFPs for a few years now. Honestly these 30" panels are top notch. If I wasn't so happy with them, I'd be all over this.

As it is, I think I will wait for the 2nd or 3rd revision. MY glorious dells are too glorious!

I think it's because 1080p is 1920 horizontal (approximately 2,000) pixels, or 2K. And therefore this is 4K.

Let's face it, it's more catchy than 3840p.

That's like saying 1080p on your phone's 5" panel is wasted. 4k@24" is still useful because larger displays are too large, and finer pixels increase visual fidelity and remove the need for hacky solutions like anti-aliasing to smooth out jagged edges on text and such. The only real impediment to its adoption is Windows desktop's lack of proper density scaling and affordable GPU power needed to run games decently on it.

Ahh ok fair enough didn't really think of it like that. Suppose it would make the image higher detailed.

Has anyone used Windows with a very high res display? How does it cope?
