    Re: QOTW: Which PC components did you upgrade in 2014?

    Juuuust ordered, the big upgrade is on the way. 5820k, 32GB RAM, GTX980, 128GB Samsung 850 Pro for the OS drive, 500GB 840 Evo for Steam installs. I'm keeping my pile of spinning rust for big slow files, and going to use the smaller current SSDs in the system for the Win 2012 Hyper-V setup - putting the VMs on SSD rather than the rust is going to be nice.

    Upgrade is from i7 860, 8GB RAM and a GTX580, so should be a nice boost. Got to be ready for Witcher 3!

    Replaced my trusty Chieftec BX case with a silverstone ps07, coupled with new 120mm fans. Lower noise and slightly cooler

    Re: QOTW: Which PC components did you upgrade in 2014?

    1.5GB ASUS GTX 580 DirectCU II --> 4GB ASUS GTX 970 STRIX
    512GB Samsung 840 Pro (bought last year) --> 840 PRO + 120GB 840 EVO (for future boot drive, got a windows 8.1 install sitting on it un-used until 10 launches) + 480GB Samsung Extreme Pro

    Finally convinced of the virtues of SSDs, thanks to the huge improvements we've seen in terms of affordability. Was also starting to have issues with high resolution textures with just 1.5GB of VRAM; 4GB seemed like the sweet spot and the GTX 970 nailed the price:performance ratio I was looking for. Looking forward to a 4K, SLI, GSync setup next year.

    Would've preferred to support the Open-Source alternative but AMD still haven't managed to win me over on the fundamentals and NVIDIA's proprietary technologies are taking care of everything I could ask for, so far.
