    HEXUS. preview:: The Nintendo Revolution

Desperate not to be the last to get on the next-gen console revelation band-wagon, Nintendo have revealed a few details and some photos of their new console, currently codenamed Revolution. Powered by an IBM CPU called Broadway and an ATI GPU called Hollywood, the Revolution could be all singing and dancing... Well, I found that funny, even if you lot didn't.

The new console boasts high-quality materials and a smart, compact design, approximately the size of three standard DVD cases stacked together. A variety of prototype colours are being showcased during E3. It will come with a silver stand that makes the system fit in with any multimedia setup, whether it's displayed vertically or horizontally.
Check out the full preview article here.

Looks interesting. If I where to get a console I would probably go for the revolution, mainly because of the full backwards compatability. It should be more convenient than using emulators on the PC.

Anyone know how this compares to the Xbox and PS3 in terms of graphics?

The real winners out of this are IBM, they make the cpu's for all 3 companies!!

And ATI to some extent with them providing the GPU oomph for X360 as well.

Gamers could be in for a long wait before they get a chance to see Nintendo's new home console in action.

Nintendo officials at the E3 games expo in Los Angeles suggested that the first opportunity to try out the Revolution would be at next year's show.

Nintendo just 'keeping up appearances' then. No wonder technical details and controler design are so sketchy at the moment.

I remember when sony hyped the PS3 to be 1000 times faster than the PS2

Anyway - PS3 is infact, well, apprently 30 times faster than the PS2

The Revolution is 2-3 times faster than the Gamecube

So really, its pants in comparison, but is it all about graphics ? Ninty can fit the older tech into a much smaller, sleeker machine and make it look better, its backwards compatible with every nintendo game ever, another plus, also, to fully utilise the PS3 and 360s power its going to take a long time, even though the specs are stupidly low conpared to the others, for the first year or 2 I'd expect the games to look pretty much the same until they manage to harness the power properly.

Gonna be interesting, I wouldnt put my money on nintendo tho, probably PS3, because you knows it

Yes, but it's all still speculation and hype. We won't know until they hit the shelves.

I'm still dubious about exactly how much of a fantastic leap forward these new machines will be anyway. We have heard it all before. I bet the PC I will have in 12 months will wipe the floor with the lot of them.

Its looks very sleek, almost the sort of style of the PS2 when it first came out, but more glossy. Console designs are leaning more and more into a piece of stylish kit to complement your sky box and DVD player. I think the dreamcast was the last console which looked like the classic console in white and grey. Personally i hope nintendo do well, and they can live up to the hype

It looks like a car player. But I don't care about the outside, I care what the insides can do and how the games play and look. Currently I hold the GC in first, followed closely by the PS2 and teh X-Box lagging behind greatly manily becuase the only games on it I have enjoyed is Halo and Fable. If I had to guess now (I guess i am doing that huh?) I would say the revolution, PS/3 will eb close together and the 360 far behind unless microsoft can get more, and better games.

I don't know about the X360 lagging far behind... As far as the latest 'industry rumours' go, the PS3 is going to be using GFX technology equivalent to NVIDIA's current 7 series chips, whereas the X360 is using new technology from ATI, which will allow the GFX chip to switch between vertex or pixel shaders on the fly in response to the game's demands... the clever bit is, it uses the same bit of silicon to do the vertex or pixel calculations AND it looks up the pipeline to see whats coming rather than wait for a bottleneck to form... this gives you an immensely powerful and capable chip... throw in the smart DDR memory and that's some impressive kit in there.

Also, MS have designed the X360 to be developer friendly, meaning they can get the best out of it with less effort than they'd need to get the same results from the PS3, which is another advantage.

Of course, this is all industry rumour...
