"However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said."
that might just save his company

I'm not as clued up on this as I'd like to be so I'm going to ask a few questions. Please excuse my iggnorance
If Mac OS will now run on x86 architecture, how can Apple ensure it will only run on "macs"? Will the new Mac/Intel chips have special instructions to ensure the software will only opperate on them?
The significance is somewhat lost on me I'll have to admit. From other posts I can see that it has the potential to blow the OS market wide open but...
Does IBM suffer because of this? Will Apple? What does Intel gain?
People have been running Mac OS on alternative hardware for years. Link.
This change will only make it easier.
Is anyone surprised they went for Intel rather than AMD? Apple have never been known for taking the affordable route.
This is a bitter pill for Apple. No way would they switch to x86 unless they felt forced to. Reading between the lines, are they afraid the Mac is coming to an end, and desperately fighting for its survival? I hope not. Although I've never used Macs, I'm glad they exist.

i assue it will only support a certain makeup of hardware
possibly by only providing drivers for that particular hardware ?
IBM have bigger fish to fry than the small mac market
hard to see if it will be good or bad for apple
intel will gain it will sell more chips at no extra effort
the main problem for apple will be how to claim a performance advantage over PC
and to justify its higher price
are IT departments going to allow design departments to purchase macs
+ for macs was it was "ment" to be better at desktop publishing
most IT departments hated macs and saw no reason for them to start off with, they are a pain in the ass to support, and more expensive
now is the oooo they look nicer going to cut any ice when the accounts department see the price of buying 100 pc's against 100 mac's
