A lot of the industry are talking about waiting for it - hoping it will drive sales for low end consumers.
The industry will speed up when it launches (whatever anyone says).
Since, at the end of the day the system integrators will force the shift to vista.
People seemed to say PCI-E wouldn't take off or DDR2 - both have been very sucessful
I can't see how you can make an August ship date when you're not past Beta 1 yet and only 35% feature complete. Hopefully a soonish Beta 2 release will ease my worries.

I don't think it's fair to compare product cycles of Mac OS and Windows, I'd say a major reason for Windows taking so long to make, and having all this legacy crap in, is because Microsoft have to cater for every bit of badly designed hardware made over the last five years or more. On the other hand, Apple know exactly what is in their computers, and pretty much stuck two fingers up to everyone with the release of OSX back in 2001, forcing driver rewrites on every hardware company who wanted to continue releasing products for the Mac platform. This is something Microsoft can't afford to do, with the huge amount of business customers they have who rely on all this old stuff working, and incidentally are big enough to insist Microsoft add support for. This is a market which simply doesn't exist for Apple, who have always been, and will continue to be for as long as I see it, only selling to consumers and creative professionals.

Especially if apple have less money to build OS's with.

Caged, i disagree with you over your view of "legacy crap" The main bad points of this current generation windows OS is security and the buffer overflow issues. Driver support is stable and has been for years.
Only in the 64bit O/S are we seeing problems with drivers again. But again nothing to do with Microsoft but to do with the device manufacturers.
The reason for the delays with Vista was/is a complete re-write of a semi complete previous version that was just not cutting the musturd.
I remember reading a Blog by Tom Archer over the complete re-write they re-initialised after realising things where going badly wrong with the development.
