Not neccessory to get that speed of writing a dvd.
It's rarely get find some dvd support that speed.
The next gen hd-dvd or blu-ray will soon be generally being used soon.

And, if you can, please tell us why makers chase ever faster burn speeds when the only way to guarantee reliable reads and writes is to burn at far slower settings?

Yup, these DVD-R(W) and CD-R(W) makers need to get their drives burning properly at high speeds rather than going for higher speeds. No point in higher speeds if it's not gonna work!
