Re: Reviews - Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti

The thing that amuses me the most however is its only NOW they have apparently got enough good chips to release the FULL FAT 15 shader version... speaks volumes about NV's terrible process management and its going to be very interesting to see the reporting figures. TSMC arent paying for the wafers anymore. NV are. Thats going to crimp the bottem line somewhat.

:edit: March 2012... and only NOW are the full keplar chips out. Speaks volumes really.

This release hasn't changed my mind, the R9 290/290X remains on my wishlist.

Re: Reviews - Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti

I don't understand why people are making such a big deal about a rubbish stock cooler on the 290, do people moan about Intels stock cooler so much? The early adopters are almost certainly going to put these cards under water or play with them for a few weeks before getting the next big thing. The rest of us will simply wait for an after market solution from the likes of MSI, ASUS etc.

If you look at the figures it's only marginally worse than my 7970's reference cooler which is absolutely fine for noise, quieter than my HDDs at idle and certainly not loud enough to be heard over my speakers / headphones in game. It's hardly FX5800 levels of noise, now that was worth moaning about.

Am i the only one who refuses to buy HDD if their noise profile goes over 35dB?

35dB, when recorded at 1mm maybe.

Where as back in the real world when the card is your case, under your desk it's as good as silent. My hard drives aren't noisey either, standard 7200rpm - a few years old now granted. The only reason they are audible is the reverb they create in the case.

Re: Reviews - Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti

To be honest I think Anandtech has been on a downward spiral for quite a while now (their case reviews in particular seem very thrown together) and these latest graphics card reviews show ridiculous bias; I do agree that AMD should have released the 290 and 290X with a better cooler but to discount it completely when (as has been said) the cost of a stock cooler card plus a custom heatsink is still significantly less than what nVidia are offering is very strange - and I can't imagine dropping that kind of cash on a graphics card and leaving it stock either (or buying a card with a stock cooler when better versions are available, which they surely will be soon).

Hmmm. Not as much extra horsepower as i was expecting. Value for money the red team still has HOWEVER if your after extra fluff, like streaming to a handheld, screen recording vai gpu etc. Then the green team is the one you go for. Personally i like nvdia physx and its 3d vision. But i must admit red team is winning on fps. Its good to have competition again, now if AMD can get their cpu's in order again...

I think you're bashing the cooler still too much, perhaps AMD has decided that they want partners to come up with better cards to differentiate themselves and not just get a huge rash of exact same cards...or more likely (to me anyway) is that they didn't come up with anything new to keep NV off the scent and engineered their cards to fit the cooler, which is where this 95 degrees comes in. These chips obviously have more headroom, it will be interesting to see what the AIB's come up with. And that is what I think is the idea, keep the punter happy with a spread of cards at different costs. It's been said loads of times already, early adopters will mess around and play with these, when the standard AIB versions etc. come along they'll be left as is
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!

No but then the reference cooler for the 780 & Titan were very good out of the box.

Too expensive, the sensible money is with AMD 290/290x right now. Now bring on the non-reference coolers. Doesn't matter if Mantle will be the next big thing or a waste of time; AMD's top tier cards are way better value regardless.

My understanding was that nVidia stipulated that the Titan be sold only with the reference HSF and to their credit it is a very good cooler. Some manufacturers like Gigabyte got around it by selling it with the reference cooler but bundling the Windforce system in the box, going *nudge*nudge*wink*wink. I wish AMD would have overhauled their cooler so there wouldn't have been all this nonsense over the past few weeks.

Yeah, this smacks of desperation. AMD have undercut them, and can't be matched on bang for buck right now.

I think you have to remember that OCUK forums are set up as a marketing tool; feel good consumer therapy and great deals galore. I'm not suprised tbh.

It seems RadeonPro will soon include a similar GPU-based screen recording feature which the author has been working on for a while - AMD cards have had the encoding hardware since the GCN release, it's just not had much software designed to utilise it yet. They've also had 'AMD Screen Mirror' and 'AMD Wireless Display' for a while now, but they're not very heavily marketed TBH - they're free to download if you have compatible hardware though.
