I'm a Bath Ales man myself; I particularly like "Gem", Barnstormer is lovely to but very heavy going... sends me to sleep.

ahh....Directors....I got very bad on that, many times, in Holmer green at a pub that used to be called the Valiant Trooper.

Quality pint....but strong. Too strong for me.

Re: The Hexus good Ale guide

Always was a good pint and the extra benefit of it was that it was usually in pubs that had otherwise crap beer.

But I live in Bury St Edmunds and so rarely see anything other than Greene King. The quality of a pint of IPA can vary from almost undrinkable to nectar depending on how well it has been kept and served. So mostly around these parts we talk about how well a pub keeps its beer rather than the beer itself. I do treat myself to Abbott now and again and we also have Old Speckled Hen in the stable.

I'm not a fan of flavoured beer or anything with "fruity overtones"...be it beer or people!

Which reminds me, can you still get bottles of St Edmunds? That brings back fond memories, the Odd one Out in Colchester & The Swan in Ipswich And Crippledick also, a good winter special of years gone by. True what you say about IPA tho, varies from nectar to dishwater, and Old Speckled Hen has fuelled many a good night out.

Yesterday in Aldeburgh tho was fuelled by Adnam's Broasdside and a Spitfire or two.

Big fan of bottled Newcastle Brown Ale- always a favourite. Tanglefoot is another wintery ale, rich and hoppy and of course my favourite draft in the local Abbot Ale - however it does have a propensity to knock your socks off!

You know I am not sure....that was the original evil brew and was the stuff of bragging rights in my teens, basically the forerunner of Carlsburg Special.

Big fan of the local brews around here - Mac Lir as Zak has mentioned, Okell's IPA & Aile are also good. Then there's Bushy's brewery - their Old Bushy Tail is a lovely pint.

you gotta be careful with names like that.

saofg (this forum) and myself often use Bishops Finger and Bishops Tipple as names for online game characters

    GANKIN' TIME !!!!!!!!!

    I'll add some local beers from Manchester into the mix now with the 2 following quality beers (well, in my eyes anyway) ;

    Joseph Holts - Fifth Sense
    http://www.joseph-holt.com/fifthsense.asp

    Joesph Holts - Maplemoon
    http://www.joseph-holt.com/maplemoon.asp

Both are so good, I've drank enough of them to give me headaches several times in Manchester
