If I remember rightly there has been some research done recently that shows that the cholesterol in egg yolk is not actually bad for you, and in moderate amounts is useful for bodybuilding etc. Will try and dig out some info when I get chance.

Cholesterol is one of the precursors for testosterone, so eating whole eggs as opposed to egg whites has postive benefits. Though not if your eating 2-3 a day of course

My policy is 'if it's good enough for chicks, it's good enough for me'. A lot of rubbish is talked about cholesterol if you ask me; how often do slim, fit people keel over due to clogged up arteries? Not very often, I reckon.

Problem with a lot of those protein shake things is that they taste about as good as my armpits after a long workout, laced with salt, and smothered in cheese...not that I'd know.

    Anyway, any decent tasting ones?

Also, I've heard of that 'eat as many grams of protein as you weigh in pounds' per day thing from numerous sources - I have no idea how anyone achieves that, the most protein-packed foods I can find hold only around 20g or so. Anyone else come across this - any suggestions? Any super-protein foods I've apparently missed out on?

Well, a lot of meat and fish is about 20% protein. I weigh about 165lb I think, so that'd be 165g of protein a day- which is maybe a tin of sardines, a decent pork chop or steak, maybe a couple of ham sandwiches for lunch- or peanut butter which contains quite a bit of protein too. Remember that even stuff like potatoes and grains have a little protein in, as does milk, cheese, eggs etc. You can easily eat 165g of protein in a day- in fact that's pretty much exactly the right amount for a normal person; 165g of protein is about 650 Calories, which is roughly a quarter of the 2500 calories an average male needs to eat in a day.

FSA recommends 55g daily for an average adult over 19yrs. Reading nutritional stuff off web they say much the same or use the g/Kg weight formula. For people that weight train they say add 10% extra or so, but not much more than that.

Hi all. I'm new to the board, for first of all, hellooo!!!! Pete's the name

I've just recently been doing lots of exercise and trying to loose my beer belly and maybe attain those washboard abs. It stems basically from having been unhealthy for a few years, being 22 and having been partying non stop, it's time to change and for just a short while in my life I want to have the body I have always wanted, just to know how it feels.

Anyway, I could go on all day, but basically I walk round the common about 40mins every morning before breakfast, play fast badminton or tennis 4+ nights a week and recently started going for a little job after badminton to warm down and burn a few more cals. Can't complain, can start to see my top abs from crunches etc and lost all the weight I want, but havent been gaining muscle as quick as I'd like. Put it down to lack of protein so been eating lots of eggs lately. I usually eat tuna salads for lunch but that's prob not enough, but I've been eating the entire egg, yolk and all. Will this be counterproductive in terms of protein in any way?

I know I have just had a rant and maybe it's slightly off topic but it seems the thread has gone that way anyway lol

Nice to meet you all! I am off to scout the other threads now...

Oh and lastly if anyone would be kind enough to offer any tips - I go abroad on hol in a weeks time. As you'd expect the last places I have left to loose fat, though there's little of it, is my belly below the belly button and love handles. I just can't get the burn on my lower abs from leg lifts I do with my uppers ones doing crunches, in fact my left thigh seems to play up before anything and I have pretty strong thighs, so I'm baffled. How can I work off that beer belly and work my lowers abs harder?

Abs are, in reality, more dependent on low body fat than muscle building. The only way to lose it is more cardio. Running, swimming, whatever, and lots of it, and cut out unnecessary fats in your diet.

    As for muscle, lift weights.

If you're going on holiday somewhere that has a pool: swimming, swimming, and more swimming. It's the best all round form of exercise there is pretty much. Also you can figure out a way to stress most muscle groups by flailing your arms/legs around in the pool. I've given my lats a pretty good workout for the last couple of weeks on Holiday.

    Thanks for the help guys!

So do you know the answer re the yolk of eggs then?

Other than constipation, if there any other reason(s) to avoid eating too many eggs a day?

The yolk of an egg contains all the fat in it. If you eat just the whites you only get the protein, which is why people sometimes do it. The yolk is the tastiest bit though, fat per se is not bad for you, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if most if the vitamins were in the yolk, so not eating it seems pretty stupid and wasteful to me.

In general crash dieting is not a good idea, but if you want to lose a couple of pounds before you go on holiday I generally find that I can see a noticeable difference on my stomach after a day or two of being hungry all day (and I can put it back with a couple of days of overeating of course). At the moment I just about have a six pack, although my abs aren't very big so it's not particularly impressive. I'm not bothered though, TBH I'd rather work on my chest, shoulders and arms, I think big stomach muscles look a bit silly.

Galants right, you need to do lots of cardio, only way to reduce yer gut. In men though, the abs tend to be the last place we lose fat from. Last few months managed to lose my gut and a slight 6 pack is starting to show. By the end of summer I believe it will be in full bloom

I do cardio every other. Start off with 30 mins on the cycle machine and then finish off on a rowing maching. Do this in the morning before you eat anything. Cardio uses bodyfat as fuel and the amount of carbs in the bloodstream influences yer body's ability to maximise fat burning. If there are a lot of carbs in yer blood from a recent meal, then fat burning decreases. The opposite will occur if there are no carbs present however. So, DON'T EAT ANYTHING BEFORE CARDIO. Straight after cardio i take a protein shake to counter any catabolic effects (eggs whites just as good). I then don't eat anything for up to 90 mins.

Meal wise, you should be eating 6 smaller meals a day, and not 3 full size meals! Also drink plenty of water as muslces are made up of about 70% water (I drink about 3 litres now). If you can, make sure its ice cold as your body will have to warm up this water which will consume calories. Avoid egg yolks, damn unhealthy! And milk is a combination of whey and casein protein, the casein protein being a lot slower digesting protein. Both are great...but whey is awesome for muscle building

Also you need 3 things to be successful... dedication, intensity and desire Sounds cheesy, but think of that next time you feel like missing yer next cardio session, works for me

Hope you find something here that's helpful

PS. AST, EAS and ProLabs have great tasting protein

    Thanks again guys!

I want to be nicely toned, not a beefcake, and I'm, getting there. Cardio wise, I've been playing badminton 4-5 nights a week and tennis and then having a job about 1-2 miles afterwards round the local fields. Seems to be doing the trick just fine. I did find an old exercise bike down the local which they said I could have - was fine till I overdid it and the thing caught fire. Must have been old leaves in it as it'd been sat outside lol 3km fast paced and it was smoking and I had to run it outside lol So far badders and that seem to be proving a really fun way of getting all my cardio in - I guess I will have to accept that the only way to get rid of the last little bit of beer belly if to keep at it. 1 week tomorrow till I leave, so fingers crossed!
