    Screw top glass jars

I am after some fairly large screw top glass jars. 2-3L preferred. I've googled for them, but couldn't find anything suitable. Things like pickles seem to come in 0.5L maybe a touch bigger. We are planning to use them to pickle tomatoes so narrow tall jars are out of the question.

    So:

    Wanted.

Low aspect ratio (i.e. stout) screw top glass jars. 2L-3L

Reward for information leading to their capture - 0.5L Jar of Pickled tomatoes whenever they are ready.

Don't let me down hexites Oh, and it can either be empty jars sold somewhere or foodstuffs sold in suitable jars at suitable price.

iirc, if you wait 'till Autumn (not that far off), Haywards will bring out there pickling vinegar with a special offer of a free empty jar. Its a great deal in that you buy a jar full of pickling vinegar and chuck stuff in it, then the excess vinegar goes into the second jar and you fill that full of pickled stuff too.

    OR

    Look here...

    http://www.ascott-shop.com/cat176_1.htm

I know that they do stuff in bulk, but maybe if you give 'em a call they can do a you a deal on a few jars?

    Half Gallon Glass Jar
Pack of 10 half gallon glass jars complete with screw on lids
    Sounds perfect
    Many thanks.

When we get round to making them (may take a while that) I'll make sure we make a jar for you. If you want it - PM me your address.

Again, many thanks, as we missed the homemade stuff, but in uk people aren't into their pickles and preserves like they are in Belarus or Russia.

Yes, but in any case i have never seen preserved tomatos anywhere in UK. Cucumbers, onions - maybe, but not tomatos. And not the way we make them

I just love the Kilner type ones, but wait until you do the "booze cruise". They are so much cheaper in France.

Wallies, chillies, onions and all sorts of pickles and chutneys! Don't tell me we don't know how to pickle in this country, its just a dying art. My mums old recipe books have whole chapters on pickling.

I suppose i didn't make myself clear. While things have moved on, not that long ago home home if you wanted things in winter you better had it preserved as shops didn't have as much fruit and veg handy all year round. While a lot of veg would keep quite long fresh in the basement (like carrots, beatroot, cabbage, potatos) other things had to be preserved. So we would, i am gonna say pickle here (but its more just salty water and herbs and garlic than vinegar) cucumbers(these we'd sometimes do in a barrel), tomatos, corgetts (and some funny shaped corgette cousin which i don't know the name of in english, in any case them two i didn't like). We'd make our own tomato sauce with minced tomatos and a lot of garlic (was really strong to start it and then would get milder throughout the year). Then there was also a 50L or so bucket of cabbage with carrot, salted with spices. We also used to preserve Aubergines - fried and with a lot of pepper to make for a spicy addition to a meal. Add to the list marinaded mushrooms.

Fruit was made into jams and what we call Compot. I.e. 3L jars with say 0.5-1L of fruit and the rest hot water, which then would rest for at least a couple of months to let it infuse with flavour. Makes a very nice drink that. So in winter when you want something tasty you go to the cellar and open a jar of something nice.

Bah. Writing all this makes me wanna go home and try some goodies. Although i have to say that everyones technique would be different and everyone would be used to their own recepies, although i believe everyone liked ours

Well, the 10 jars will go some way to helping me survive here.

Tomatoes ewwww....they make me retch. I like most other pickles though. I should get into it really, a bag of pickling onions and a big container of vinegar costs next to nothing. Does it preserve the vitamins and minerals etc. in the fruit/vegetables?

My grandad was (and AFAIK still is) a great jam maker, his blackcurrant jam was always a real treat for us as kids.

Have you tried them that you are going ewwww? And they are salted, not really "pickled". No vinegar.

Any form of tomato makes me retch. I physically struggle to eat them be they raw, cooked, canned etc. Tomato sauce in pizzas, bolognese etc. I can cope with, but only if it's not too strong. It's pretty much the only food I just cannot stand, I even scoffed an entire andouilette sausage on a recent booze cruise, but tomatoes = teh no.
