Re: Do you stock up on bargains?

If I could do so, I would. Unfortunately the space I have is limited, so it's usually a matter of getting what is available of the usual list at the time, even if the price has gone up (unless in specific cases there are alternative choices that I would be happy with, which are on offer on that occasion instead - such as with air freshener), with enough flexibility that if shopping doesn't happen on its usual day, there is still enough there that there wouldn't be an issue of running out of things to eat/drink for a few days more.

In most cases, I choose own-brand products anyway, so it's not as bad as it could be for others in the same position that prefer branded.

That's part of the joy of shopping. I do most online, but still enjoy buying odd bits from shops. When you go to buy your favourite ground coffee(instant! spits) and it's 89p a packet cheaper, I clear the shelf. So I just buy more of usual shop if cheaper. It's interesting to look at all the clever marketing techniques they use these days. So being aware of those helps.

Re: Do you stock up on bargains?

I've actually been on a reversal at the moment. I'm trying to use what I already have before adding to it or replacing it.
That said, if Toothpaste is on offer then I'll grab a few, the one I get is normally expensive but as soon as i spot an offer, 2 or 3 will end up in the basket.

I have very limited space for food storage so buying in bulk wouldnt really help me sadly as much as I would like to do it.

I shop once a week and I hate other shoppers so, every Sunday morning at 9.30 the doors open at Tesco, and I can usually do a full shop and hit the tills as they open by 10am.

I do stock up on bargains - If there's a special on Yorkshire Tea, I'll buy a second box. Once in a blue moon they do Necafe Azera at half price so I'll grab two or three of those. Raw meats and most things that can be frozen are high on the list too. Other than that, it's usually things like cleaning products we'll stock up on if they're on special.

Well, as I said before, the "salt yer pasta thoroughly" advice comes from Antonio Carluccio himself, as well as being echoed by at least half a dozen Michelin-starred chefs.

As for what's in my pasta, I know what's in it as I make it.

Now, being brave? Well of course. She's there, I'm here and she doesn't have my address.

Being stupid? Not stupid enough to give her my address.

I do sometimes yep. It tends to be specific items that I look out for though > £3 or £4, I'm not a guy that checks prices on a tin of beans.

Three guesses on her biggest criticism of any 'name' chef featured on TV?
Yep - "Look at that, chucking great handfuls of salt in!!!".... To be fair, some chefs do seem to put LOADS in, Jamie especially.

She's also sent food back to kitchens for being too heavily salted (and sometimes I've agreed), and told Sir Michael Caines to his face that his food sucks.... To his credit, not only did he take it like a man, not only did he take it like a gentleman, but he fully concurred with her assessment. It was a Sunday Roast, which I thought was rather good, but definitely not of Michelin standard. He chaled it up to experience and pulled the dish, we got comp'ed coffee and desserts, the maitre d' tore up our bill and all has been great since.

In the old days that'd be enough... sadly, she now works for Her Majesty's Government and could probably find all your details if she had to!!

Well, you never know when running a trace will itself trip an alert. Running an unauthorised one may set off a criminal prosecution, too.

Re: Do you stock up on bargains?

I'm a bugger for stocking up on tins and dry foods that won't go off even if they are close to the sell by date, we are lucky and have a pantry so I can squirrel away quite a lot of stuff.

Maybe she's what they call, IIRC, a supertaster. It has something to do with having several times as many taste buds on the tongue.

Each of us can really only know how what we eat tastes to us, not to anyone else. But supertasters demonstrably have more sensitive taste, a bit like dogs have FAR better sense of smell than humans.

A friend of mine always used to moan if I stirred his tea with a spoon I'd stirred my coffee with. I thought he was mucking about. So for months, I did his tea with a fresh or washed spoon, and only after stirring it went anywhere near coffee. He didn't moan once. So after several months, I made his tea, made my coffee, washed the spoon and then dipped it very briefly in my coffee, shook the excess off, and did a single in-out dip in his coffee. And he moaned about a coffee taste in his tea.

If Mrs TT is amenable, I'm quite willing to accept that she likes her pasta how she likes it, but for me, unless the water is heavily salted, pasta is bland. Bear in mind, only a tiny bit of salt is absorbed as pasta cooks, and the vast bulk of the salt is poured down the sink when you drain the wster off.

Where that leaves you, dunno. Or rather, I do ..... bland pasta. Sorry, dude.

Nah, she works in a role where the slightest whiff of a possible impending remark that could maybe constitute the presentation of the precipitation of a threat, so long as you read it backwards, standing on your head at night with sunglasses on... is enough to justify running traces and background checks and months of investigation on someone.... although in the interests of expediency, it may be quicker to do the checks later and just send the SAS in first.... ALL of them!!

I'm mostly joking about that... mostly.

Not a term I have used... fussy, picky, pedantic, unrealistic, difficult, awkward, opinionated.... plus several words that would get me Ban-hammered by Thor himself. Never a supertaster, though.

Given that we're in Kitchen and Cooking, I'm curious about what recipes involve tyres?
