    Issues

Can you guys here help settle a few issues me and the missus seem to be having...

Opening a tin of beans or whatever, using half the contents and then putting the tin in the fridge, now I always thought this was a bad thing for some reason that I dont know, is it an old wives tale or should you really not put things in tins in the fridge?

    Freezing meat.
She'll leave stuff in the fridge until she wants to use it, until its at its sell by date and then she'll put it in the freezer.
My argument is that you should put it straight in the freezer if ur not going to use it and then if you want to use it that night you take it out of the freezer before you goto work in the morning.

Yeah Tins in the fridge are bad, should just remove the contents of tin and put in a bowl etc. (think the reasoning is that tins in colder conditions can turn toxic - time period is weeks tho, not days, still prefer to use bowls as i can heat directly when taken out of fridge)

Freezing meat on day of purchase then defrosting naturally is safest way. Having lots of meat in the fridge is also not the safest situation to be in really..

I think the tin situation is something to do with oxidising the metal.

most packaging says freeze on day of purchase - leave it out too long and you'll be freezing all the nasty bugs that have grown on it for a few days. Definitely should be frozen as soon as it's bought.

Tins inthe fridg is a no-no, & freezing on day of purchase is correct. However my wife's of the same mind as Trig's mrs & does the same things.

I don't think it's anything to do with the fridge, you shouldn't leave food in opened cans full stop. As I understand it, once exposed to air the tin coating on the inside of the can oxidises into the food. This is probably worse for some foods than others (you can literally see where the metal has changed if you leave acidic fruit open) but you should always put any remaining food from a tin into a tupperware container or similar before you put it in the fridge.

If you know you're going to be freezing something then put it in as soon as you can- but if there's a chance you might eat it soon then it doesn't really do any harm leaving it out and then freezing it. I quite often buy the reduced meat in the supermarket and freeze that, which is pretty much the same as buying it at full price and leaving it in your fridge for a few days. Never done me any harm.

Good luck convincing her though Trig, I've been married to my wife nearly two years now and I've still barely begun to make a dent on her kitchen bad habits! Her favourite one is handling raw pork/chicken and then going round the kitchen touching everything. NOOOOOOO!!!!!

tbh, if it was really unsafe to refridgerate tins it'd say on teh side 'please re-package and consume within 3 days of opening..'

you mean like smoking in the 1960's had smoking is bad mmmkay on the side of the packaging?.

just because there isn't a warning doesn't mean its not bad. Sure different scales, but eating metal oxide is bad. May not kill you but i believe from what i remember metal oxides have a habit of making people infertile if constantly exposed.

My parents have plastic lids that are designed to go over the top of opened tins. Perhaps these help by reducing oxidisation and stopping the contents from drying out?

My missus is exactly the same with the freezing bit - her argument is that if its only the 'sell by' date when she freezes it she could have theoretically just bought it and as far as the meat knows its been put straight in the freezer. You can't tell her though.

I feel like waiting til its frozen solid then beating her with it shouting "I told you it'd be bad for you".

if there was ACTUAL proof of that then tin makers would have it stamped all over the place to avoid a lawsuit. imagine i became infirtile because of it and sued.. i could get millions, as could many other people. companies just dont take that sorta risk any more

i cant find a single can in my cupboard that says you have to repackage it to keep it for 3 days

which are all things containing tomato juice, which is acidic, and oxidises the tin faster..

what you mean like there wasn't actual proof of cigarettes doing harm to you well before it was public knowledge hehe.

Or the fact that in a few years time there won't be rafts of law suits against mobile phone companies after continued use caused brain cancers....

Simple fact is that you look at how many patents phone companies have out on radiation shielding and you can see how obvious the dangers are.

Companies take these risks every day. I know of several instances of companies breaching million pound plus penalty clauses and hiding the fact it ever breached them.

They don't need to stamp it all over tins that much tho really, as most people know putting tins in the fridge is a bad idea....
