ddr3 ram, low voltage?

Quick question, was going to reorder the g-skill 8gb ripjaws at £35 but noticed g-skill do a 1.25V option, curious as to how much energy/watts using 1.25v instead of 1.5v actually saves? Is it a noticeable amount or is it so useless i may as well just order the cheapest possible? Not sure if this is true or not but i also read that the new intel (ivybridge is it? i havent kept up with intel recently) cpu will require lower voltage ddr3 ram i.e 1.25v.

I think it will make little difference but wanted someone elses opinion first .

good question.

I seem to remember DDR2 used around 2.5 amp per stick, if that's still correct then you're looking at around 3.75 watts vs 3.125 watts per stick.

main advantage to 1.25v ram is it runs cooler, most of the 1.25v ram you get are half height sticks and don't use heat sinks.

1.5v ram doesnt really need heatsinks either. The stuff in my g/f's rig didnt get any where near hot, the only reason I put heatsinks on them was because I had them sitting around spare.

I only went with the white corsair vengeance as the are white and go perfect with the 600T white chassis when you seen them through the window on the chassis.

I'd just go with the 1.5v option, there's not really gonna be a noticeable difference and the 1.5v sticks should overclock better.

bringing this up again as it appears the 1.25v has been going down and down.... costs £44 on ebuyer now and the 1.5v has gone back to £40 , so for £4 more im thinking the tides turned as regardless if it reduces wattage much(still that .6w is ALL the time even if in standby so it does add up a bit like 1 quid a year or so ) it would run a bit cooler and would allow me to have fans quieter as i use watercooling it means i dont get as much air over the mobo so reducing this factor would help i guess.

Yeah, I noticed it too. The only thing was when I read the description it seems to suggest it is for Intel Chipsets but, I guess if your motherboard can do the low voltages you'd be ok?

all g.skill stuff seems to mention this like the ripjaws are for intel but its just marketing, look at the product description for the ripjaws:
Features: Designed Specifically for Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs and P67 Platforms
Basically intel has been the test platform but the memory should differ at all, it has to be built to spec so ddr3 fits ddr3 slots etc, so basically as long as amd boards use ddr3 it should be fine. I will have a hunt over g.skill forums see if anything confirms this though!

I was just working on the basis that some motherboards might not be able to provide that low a voltage for the DRAM but, I just looked at the Asus M5A88M and it can go as low as 1.20Volts so it would be fine as you said.

I'm seriously tempted to buy an 8gb Ripjaws kit and an M5A88M. It would allow me to unlock the 4th core and also give my SSD a bit more speed (as it is currently limited by SATA2).

i know what you mean, so tempted to just screw waiting for bulldozer and buy an intel system... must wait a bit longer!

Atleast yours is only limited by sata 2... my c300 only gets 100mb read and 130mb write! limited by my crappy motherboard not support ahci stupid asus and my f60 is just as bad lol. Deciding how long i should wait for purchasing ram though cause well i already missed out on the £35 ripjaws by waiting atleast amazon refunded me for my 60day old £59 ripjaws lol! bought when i thought it wouldnt go lower than ddr2

I remember when it was £35 someone saying it would go lower and it didn't. Can the heatsinks be removed easily from the Ripjaws? I'm not sure they would fit under my CPU cooler.
