bit confused, ddr2 is more expensive ~100% more! Take ddr2 pc6400 (800mhz, cant see any stock of 1000mhz left) and take a 2x2gb matched set, thats £38 for a value set where as ddr3 2x2gb pc1280 (1600mhz) costs £23 and its not the value set... take an 8gb set and it is only £37 .

ddr3 was slower than dd2 but now timings are down to a respectable level and clock speeds are much higher along with them requiring less power (most 1.5v compared to 1.9-2.2v). Im wondering what you have seen that makes ddr2 better in your opinion?

Seriously, DDR2 is more expensive now. Didn't think it would be to be honest.

DDR2 is pretty much compatible with any CPU and motherboard, and the top models or even PC2-6400 models are pretty fast.

Yes the voltages are lower in DDR3, but its really quite new, if some people are stuck with AM2+/AM2 boards for the moment DDR3 isn't really an option, to get everything compatible its quite expensive.

But I agree with your post.

There was a review someone stating the little difference between DDR3 and DDR2 but can't remember where. But they say it isn't a major noticeable difference in performance.
But hey I have learned something new

Re: 8gig the way to go?

fair does, i was shocked at ddr3 prices... ordered my g-skill 8gb ddr3 kit for £59 at amazon for my future build (bought end of june or july, thought it wouldnt get cheaper as 4gb was £35 for ddr2 at the lowest point!) but last month it was already down to £37 thankfully amazon refunded me after 2 months of it sitting gathering dust so im just waiting till my build to buy but seems prices starting to go up a bit now .

Id say ddr2/3 are same in performance unless you pay alot more for ddr3 high end stuff but difference is not worth it really. Like you said though if you have a ddr2 board and arent upgrading then ddr2 is worth it, no point switching just to get ddr3!

There is no reason not to upgrade to 8gb with RAM at its current price.
