The same way as with 7 tabs? It's not exactly a lot to keep track of. Chrome has a decent task manager and there are extensions that make it easier but I always know where each tab it because they are logically organised.

About 5 windows spread over two monitors, between 2 and 20 tabs in each window. They often get opened in bulk for work or research (up to ~30 at a time) and then closed when finished with.

More anecdata - a single Facebook tab in Firefox:

My Gmail window in Chrome is regularly over 1GB and I have to kill and restart hourly to keep it below. Even my mum has enough tabs open nowadays to cause RAM issues with 8GB. My netbook which I upgraded from 1GB to 2GB can't even open Chrome any more.

Yes, but you've already demonstrated your usage is very unusual (which it sounds like you might have inherited). All you can say from that is that it's not overkill for you/your genetics.

She only has 3-4 tabs open and her knowledge of a computer is limited to email, iPlayer and Skype.

Facebook is far from abnormal usage and it only takes four tabs to bring a computer to a standstill. The simple fact is that normal use for the interquartile population is now close to being impossible on 8GB of RAM.

Then something is broken. Our 4GB ram computer copes fine with many more tabs than that, including facebook.

The simple fact is that normal use for the interquartile population is now close to being impossible on 8GB of RAM.
When the vast majority of PCs are likely to only contain 4GB or less, it's a wonder this sudden cessation of computer use isn't headline news.

Re: I always hear 16gb memory is an overkill - but why ?

I've got 16GB myself, but that's because I'm a bit lazy with bookmarks and prefer to just have everything open.

Currently using 3.4GB according to Windows 8.1 Task Manager and that's with 26 tabs open. (I don't usually have so many tabs but I'm looking for a job so...) 3 of the tabs are anime tabs with the anime already loaded.

I've also got Steam downloading FF13 in the background (my god why is it 50GB?! poor SSD!) as well as a Skype video call chat too and other small bits and bobs.

I think 4GB for non gamers is fine tbh, 8GB for gamers. 16GB+ for people who run virtual desktops (I do) and video edit.

I had 4GB in my brother's machine and it would run out of memory sometimes when gaming so I upgraded it to 8GB and now it flies again.

In my parents NUC system, they have 4GB and for web browsing, streaming and emails it's completely fine for them even with McAfee LiveSafe on there.

I don't know whether websites have changed or browsers but I literally can't keep an instance of Chrome open with just two tabs on a 2GB netbook (this is with a fresh install of Windows albeit XP SP2).

How odd. I'll give it a try at the weekend when a friend's bringing a 2GB laptop over. A few months ago I tried a 2GB XP SP2 system and it was fine for casual use/internet browsing.

Edit: it's still fine. I'd suggest something you are doing is quite unusual.

Ive only ever used all my memory (8gb) when rendering. Even in games I think the most Ive used is 5gb. So I guess its just a 'just in case' kinda thing

Say what?! Most laptops are still sold with 4GB RAM as standard which covers most of your non-IT population. The only reason we have more than 8GB at work is for video editing/VMs. At home I've had 8GB for many years with no issues what-so-ever, no swap file so everything is in memory. I have a lot more crap and tabs open than at work as well as more Photoshop CC usage and 8GB has never been an issue. I'd suggest you investigate what is going on with your machine because it's not normal to require more than 8GB of RAM just for browsing the web.

FF with 10 tabs open all day is only using just over 0.5GB. It might go up to 750MB if I'm doing a lot of opening/closing of new tabs, using Firebug etc a lot.

I'd love to know how you get away with that!

Right now, Firefox with 4 tabs (Gmail, Twitter, YouTube and this - regular stuff) has been open for a couple of days and is using 1.5 GiB. It's also maxing out a core on my i3. Chrome is much hungrier with many tabs (Facebook, YouTube, etc.) using more than 1 GiB each...

Isn't there a memory bug in current Chrome 64 that slowly eats memory? It has been on the google forums for ages and is awaiting being fixed.

If you are not doing some heavy rendering 16gb is overkill

Pretty heavy rendering if the OP is waiting two years for it to complete!

Built this rig in Aug 2008, had 4GB RAM back then. It was enough, for back then. But more recently I've had to upgrade it to 8GB (sidenote: DDR2 is getting rare now..!), as right now I'm using up 3.24GB! I wouldn't say 16GB is overkill, it is "future proof". Overkill would be 128GB.
