Oops - no. It needed a boost from 1.225 to 1.250 (actual is a touch lower than the set VID). I knew that didn't look quite right when I typed it!

IBT 20 passes on high: the evidence

The raise in vCore means I'm hitting 50°C. Still running case fans on low though so it's nice and quiet.

Edit: I was web browsing while running IBT - hence the variable times.

Go for it. If it has the two 'AC's in the stepping then install it.

If the stepping code indicates it's not a Deneb, you could send it back under DSR without so much as touching it. Alternatively, you've bought a cheap spare AM3 CPU. It's not like there's much else that's cheaper available.

The golden rule is to buy a cpu powerful enough for what you need.

You get a cheap dual core Athlon II for the price of a cheap dual core Athlon II, anything else is a bonus right?

You should be able to get an OK if not stellar overclock on it, and although there is a chance that not all 4 cores will unlock chances are at least one of them will (if your motherboard supports that).

And it is essentially an Athlon II. The Athlon X2 name is just an oddity really.

Price at Scan just went up from £31.84 to £33.37.

    Re: Athlon X2 5200+ 45nm 2.3GHz AM3 unlocks to Phenom FX-5200

Hmm, I was considering getting on of them for my second PC but my current motherboard doesn't do unlocking and I can see it getting expensive quite quickly. Kind of glad they're gone now (not for the people who want one obviously ), it removes temptation for me! xD
    Still interesting though.

Most you can hope for there is unlocking extra l2 cache and a decent overclock. Not seen the cache unlock confirmed yet either.

    Did you order from Scan?

yes, got it from scan. They also send me 3 silicone cases for a 20Gb Ipod which is a bit odd - would have thought it was cheaper for them to throw them in the bin rather than posting them to me to do that

You could always return it under DSR if you want, provided you've not used it.

that would be naughty considering I use the free postage offer. I'll give it a try and if I can't get anything reasonable out of it I'll just punt it on ebay. Some you win and some you lose, bought a x2 5000 for £30 last year from ebuyer that unlocked and overclocked a charm to a triple core phenom with 6Mb level 3 cache (4 cores unlocked but one of the cores wasn't stable).

Yeah I suppose so. It's a good CPU anyway and should have a good resale value since they seem pretty hard to get hold of now.
