i had my computer in bits today for a clean and i checked the space above the VRMs ans there looks to be a good 25mm of space. should fit one of the passive heatsinks no probs.
Just wondering where i can fit another fan. The thoughts of drilling a 60mm hole on my case above them and fitting a fan have been swirling around my head.
has anyone got any good ideas???
Is there a fan on the back of the case right near them?
I would have thought that, along with the air movement from your CPU cooler would be enough in an ATX case without adding a noisy little fan. You could always put a more powerful fan on there if your really worried.
Are you planning a big overclocking?
It does have a fan at the back but my hyper 212 has a push pull config and my fear is that the airflow between the cooler fan and the rear case fan isn't picking up enough heat from the VRM's
Mind you
If I had some passive coolers on the VRM's it might make it better.
Thats not a massive overclock, only 400Mhz. I wouldn't be surprised if you could still undervolt depending on how old the chip is. I have my 955 running at 4.2! Admittedly i do have a H100 though.
As long as the airflow through the case is fairly balanced (perhaps with a bit of positive pressure)im pretty sure you will be fine, like i said, possibly think about improving the fans in your case. What have you got in there at the moment?
The 965 comes at 3.4Ghz stock.
I pushed mine to 3.8Ghz with changing the multiplier from 17 to 19. Running stock voltage as well.
My case has 2 green LED sharkoon fans for intakes at the front. One at top one at bottom.
The top one is in line with the hyper 212 evo.
This has the coolermaster fan that came with it on the front for the push and a random fan for the pull.
There is a second random fan on the back of the case for exhaust.
All fans are 120mm and the 4 fans for the intake, CPU and exhaust are all in a row and the air flow is pretty good.
Been toying with getting 2 green LED coolermaster fans to replace the random ones.
My air flow is pretty good if I think so myself.
Surprisingly quiet as well.
Been wanting to push my CPU to 4Ghz but not tried yet. My CPU is about 4 month old.
I reckon you should be fine, sticking some little heatsinks on there would definately put my mind at ease though Out of curiosity, when you touch the VRMs with your fingers how long can you hold your finger on before it gets too hot... once the PC has been switched on for a little while obviously!
Will try that next time I get a chance. On my phone at the moment so not at PC.
The GA-MA770-UD3 was a £50 to £60 motherboard when released and was designed more for the 95W TDP CPUs,if overclocking is taking into consideration. From what I gathered from other forums with people using motherboards with similar VRM sections, making sure the VRMs are well cooled helps. Some of the higher end Gigabyte motherboards such as the AM3 890GX ones also used 4+1 phase VRMs but using beefier components and better VRM cooling.
i am sure this board takes up to 125W processors as iirc, thre are older phenoms that are 140w and therefore not compatable.
My cpu is 125w.

Fair point.
i do hope that gigabybe anticipated the additional loads due to overclocking and built it accordingly.
The life of the VRMs is affected quite considerably by the temperature. e.g. at around 100c they might only last 5000 hours whereas at 60c they might last 200 000 hours (these are not necessarily real life figures btw), hence why they ask you to improve the cooling and also why i was asking you to see how long you could touch them for. Whilst it obviously isn't an accurate measurement of temperature, if you cant touch it for more then a a millisecond, its probably too hot.
