    Short review: Captain America

I just wanted to make a little post here about Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).
It's pretty uncommon these days for me to be able to get to the cinema, however this year I have seen Xmen and Thor films, both of which I loved (am a v. long term Marvel comics fan).

Captain America however was fantastic - better for me than the other 2, and although a little unrealistic in places (can this be a valid criticism of a superhero film???), had a much clearer message and storyline than the other 2 films - simply to stand up and 'do the right thing' when time calls for it.
I got absolutely swept along by it, loved it, and thought also the effects were stunning - not so much the explosions etc (they were all fine, but we expect that), but the numerous scenes of a very weedy-body Steve Rogers pre-transformation. Excellently-done.

    Easily worth admission price

Saw this not long ago too, really enjoyed it. Was never really into comic books, but I've been really enjoying all the marvel movies, despite expecting to thoroughly hate them.

The comic has got to be the most boring thing ever. Glad the films OK. Might check it out.

But then, I think Thor is a z list superhero as well, and I know people who have enjoyed that.

Have to admit i was pretty disappointed by the film. It was just a big trailer for The Avengers and the Red Skull made such a big fuss about obtaining the power of the gods, the predictably he used it to, like every other super villain, build lazer guns.

    Re: Short review: Captain America

I'm awaiting the right time to see this.. and Thor

that time will be, probably, when it's second hand on Blueray on Ebay.

I always hold out small amounts of hope for Marvel films... my childhood of lying in tents in the back garden all summer long, reading Marvel comics ... leaves me with mammoth expectations, rarely fulfilled.

Xmen 1.... rubbish to be honest.
    Spiderman... average
    Hulk 1... dire.

But... occassional suprises Daredevil was way better than I expected, and Iron man 1 and 2 make me smile. Xmen 2 was good.

Thor holds hope... so does Cap. But I dare not risk the cinema expense for fear of walking out half way through, muttering about rubbish

    Hi,

watched it just recently and being a 70's Marvel comic fan, it felt pretty true to the comics, I must dig them out and have another read.

The Marvel movies have really stepped up in the last couple of years, Thor was pretty good too.

Stuff come up when this came out in cinema and it was the one I was looking forward to the most. Xmen first class and Thor were both good (Xmen edged it by quite a distance tho). Can't wait for the avengers.

    Hi,

forgot about First Class, another one that relates pretty well to the original comic series of the 60's and 70's.

The Avengers does look good too, and not too surprised to see them jump to later series with Hawkeye and The Hulk to provide some action, rather than Ant Man of the earlier comics.

Talking about it just makes me want to dig out my old comes that I have from the 70's, yes I am that old

    Re: Short review: Captain America

I really enjoyed Captain America, so did my wife actually thinking about it. Had a gritty feel to it, captured the character from the comics perfectly. We were hooked from start to finish, we were wondering how he was going to end up in modern times to slot into the avengers.

Thor was equally good, if you havnt seen that yet I would highly recommend it. Story is only so so but the start and the way it ends gives great depth to the character, loved the way it started with the Ice Giants then it meanders along till later in the film, it was good though start to finish.

Is everyone that has been watching these Marvel fillms been watching the little bits at the end of the credits, theres little bits on Avengers etc

On a slightly different note. Green Lantern if you want to see a half decent superhero movie. It did get a bit of a slating at the cinema but was literally great fun to watch at home. Origin story giving decent info on the Lanterns etc and the hot headed Hal Jordan. Well worth a watch if you like the DC stuff.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

Also a Marvel aficianado but sadly there have been some poor film versions ... 'Iron Man 2'.

    Looking forward to Thor.

    Re: Short review: Captain America

Thor was good, walked a fine line between comedy and action and did so well. Nice to see Hopkins on screen too, even if he's in his ninth retirement and he only plays himself these days. It also set things up so they didn't have to tack an extra thirty minutes on to Captain America explaining the cosmic cube and Norse gods. I enjoyed it less than Thor over all, but then I've never been a huge Captain America fan anyway.

Marvel have been doing well pulling the franchises together into one solid universe, it almost annoys me to say it because they've spent nearly ten years killing the Spiderman I knew but they have. Although pick of the bunch this year is still X-Men First Class for me, even if it does play with continuity.

It's a shame DC don't seem to be having much sucess doing the same thing, although their animated features have been absolutely brilliant.

    Re: Short review: Captain America

Have to say that I rather enjoyed Cap America, but was left disappointed by Thor and First Class was a bit meh Being an X-men fan I was looking forward to first class, but it was average.

It also doesnt look as if the series will continue, which is a shame as much of it was unresolved (Cyclops anyone?).

Lets hope The Avengers (which I never read) is up to scratch.
