Lol! Sorry, I wrote that after a couple of glasses of red wine!

Long and short of it, the upstream is currently very limited in comparison to the downstream, not only in the physical bandwidth available. But also in the way data is transmitted back to Virgin.

Giving customers a 1mb upstream is possible now, but factor in another 300 - 400 customers in the same area with 1mb uploads and we are back to dial up speeds at best.

Trig, my 10mb is fine at home. You may have a fault in your area/installation, if you ring them up, log a fault and ask for a DOCSIS ping to be done (basically pings the internal MAC of the modem excluding your kit from the test) this should show up any problems.

Jamin, any idea when they're going to start rolling out to more areas again?

NTL stopped laying cable about 6 miles away

Metier9: Hmm... used to do statics but I'm not sure they are available anymore.

Stoo: Bummer mate, happened to me too, used to live in a new build flat 30m away from a connection. I know there is talk of starting to build the network again and fill in areas that were missed. I have had a look, but can't find any info mate.

the cost of laying fiber is so high it would make your eyes water!

They will probably only lay it if they feel there is a demand for it.

I have a 4mb and never get 4mb from it in any test (always 3.7mb) although my upload is supposed to 384k i do tend to get closer to 420K.

And I dont mean under their pillows....

I presume you live near me and I agree 10MB at peak times is about as fast as ISDN round these parts.

20mb/50mb? How about giving customers the 10mb they pay for.

Another reason they're probably rolling this out is that they've been playing with traffic shaping in certain areas, so I imagine this will be enforced on the whole network.

Can't be arsed to try and explain this to whichever call centre I get put through, though back in the day I used to get a load of Welshies, does it only switch over to India out of UK "working hours"?

I think experiences vary. Where I live for example, my 10Mb NTL cable is rock solid. Of course there are many factors which can affect performance, but when I measure available bandwidth I'm typically getting my 10Mb (or close enough). Its also very reliable, I get very few outages (that I've noticed) in a year.
