Question Very quick simple networking quesion

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=421262

Would this allow me to plug 2 networking devices (NAS + Squeezebox 3) into a wireless hun which only has one ethernet port?

    Thanks.

Yes, as long as the wireless accesspoint supports bridging networks..

A switch is better than a hub.

Wireless = half duplex in nature, hub = half duplex.. if most of your data is going only one way or not using more than 1 device at a time you might as well buy a cheap o hub .

Switches are so cheap, and if you have more than one device on it, it will benefit from the duplex connection. It will only be the connection to the rest of the network that is half duplex. Or at least that is how I understand it..

Yeah get a switch as they are more intelligent than a hub and is higher up the OSI model. If you are going to pass huge amount of date though the switch/hub a switch will cut down on the lost packets and the network shall run faster.

I would still hard wire it,

the saying goes "Wireless is not a replacement to wired networks"... if its a NAS although how big? Is it a bog standard enclosure? Either way i would still wire it.

Yes wireless is allways slower and if you are going to stream media fom the NAS to a pc is shall drop frames and not run as well if it is over a wire. when i watch media from my server i use a wire on my laptop and you can tell the diffrence from when i switch over to the wireless. Get a 1Gbit switch and Gigabit card for your machine and your be laffing.

Gb is overkill for streaming, it's only when you start chucking a few GB over the lan Gb will show a major advantage. A 1mbit/sec stream will still stream at 1mbit/sec over 100 or 1000mbit.
