If I leave my ADSL router disconnected for over 7 days then does the 10-day training period begin again?
I've read somewhere that it does but cannot find the link now so was wondering if anyone on here knows for sure.

Not sure if this has the answers to your questions but I found it useful when understanding ADSL training:
http://www.plus.net/support/broadban...ax_guide.shtml
It will readjust ever x hours downwards, otherwise it will readjust upwards after x days stable. Can't remember the exact numbers though.
After my 'upgrade' to MAX I was stable for about 5 days, then unstable for about 2.5 weeks, ever since then it has been OK.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
The connection will drop down after a few hours of instability andf will take 3 days of stable connection to go back up.
The training period will not restart from leaving your equipment unplugged. If you want the line to be retrained then call your ISp and request this. There has to be a good reason for you to want this doing though(faulty router during initial training period ETC)
I work for Zen internet dealing with DSL faults so know a fair bit about max
