    Sky broadband - any good?

Moving house and was thinking of getting sky broadband (£20 a month with tv for 8mb 40gb). Not too keen on the 40gb limit because of all the steam games, patches and on demand content but am hoping that the 16 unlimited will be brought to my area soonish.

Does anyone have sky broadband and what's your experience with it? Anyone been slowed down for heavy use?

Have had a few people with this, the actual broadband wasn't bad, the service wasn't good and the over subscription was a bit of a worry, someone else may be able to offer more info on what its like today

The main problem imo is the horrible modem/router

it's a netgear DG834GT, and it constantly gets too hot and am forced to take out the AC to cool it down and then reboot it. im on the 8mb service and get 5mb so it's not bad. butwhen the router gets hot i lose my connection and it sets it to 1mb..

if you hve your own adsl2 router, it's probably better to use that...

a linksys one? they are kinda expensive for adsl2 tho, but my wrt54g cable one has been running 24/7 ever since I got it running and no overheating problems. those netgear ones are slim and made for looks, maybe thats why it overheats.

Can you use your owner hardware with Sky Broadband? I thought it was locked to the hardware they provide (yes, I know a MAC isn't hard to spoof, but...) though that may have changed.

Strange - out of all the routers we've ever had people use here at work, the DG834G has come out tops. I even bought one for myself and I've not had to reset it once.

Is it a problem you've come across lots of times with lots of different ones?

Well.....ive had i now for 3 months and for a tenner its great.

I get a constant 14mb dl speed which is excellent.

The only prob is that the router, im sure, is set to time out after a few hours so the connection needs to be re-established. Its only a 1 minute job so for that price i cant complain.

I'm looking at getting the Sky Broadband + Sky Talk + Sky (6mixes) next year, for the pricey sum of £26/month. That includes the 8mb 40gb Broadband Service (ADSL 2+ isn't enabled here yet).

Anyone know what sky are like re: Caps? I have a feeling as a student house we might hit it on a few occasions....

Only got sky plus not broadband but if they use the same customer service then you'll be on the phone forever if you have a problem.

Just gotten rid of sky broadband, (THANK GOD!) the router that comes with has plenty of ok features in the interface but it loses connection daily requiring reboots.

The actual sky internet was terrible for me, i had gotten terrible dns's one after the other. Anything using a url such as www.google.com that required resolving using a DNS took literally minutes but anything transferring using ip addresses (bypassing dns) got speeds almost comparable to my old bulldog 16mb connection.

The main trouble was the fact that although it was adsl broadband you and even sky themselves are not given your username and password, wach unique user and password is hard coded into the router and buried deep in a custom sky firmware for the netgear router. if you do retrieve the username and password and try again on another modem device you get the good line stats again but you cannot connect it seems as though it is also dependant on the MAC address.

The support was terrible too, i spent a day asking if i could use another device only to have to use the slow internet to find the answer myself anyway. I had welsh, scottish and indian tech support on the same number all of which got me nowhere. Eventually after a single week of use my router actually just decided to give way. The support procedures are horrible too. They had to make a note that the router is not working and make me ring a diagnostics number and then ring back before they start to process a replacement.

All in all Sky = Bad

Looking at all this I decided to stick to hi-velocity for now.

My neighbours have Sky BB, they came and installed it el-rapido and they have approx a 5mb connection, I'm with BT and am still stuck with 2mb. My neighbours haven't reported any problems with the BB service except that they installed the McAfee suite software which stopped connection to any email service, so no access to Yahoo or Hotmail email.

Had the dg834gt for over a year now and seems solid enough, only had to reset it once over the year.

Never gets too hot really unless you one of those paranoid people who thinks that warm components will crap out on you.
