Got a Netgear GA311 and it runs terrible under vista (even though the realtek 8169 is certified for Vista), can't get anything over about 70Mbps transfer rate with the realtek driver and the system just plain refuses to install the Netgear driver package.
Anyone recommend a Gigabit NIC for use in Vista?
70 Megabytes per second is about the best you can expect on a Gigabit network.
The 1 Gigabit refers to the line speed, including packet overhead, and is in bits not bytes. Also if your network card is on the PCI bus, then that will be a bottleneck, and will slightly limit the top speed.

The best you should expect real-world is about 700mbit, i.e. 88 mbytes/sec. If you made the cables yourself and you're not very good at it, 70mbytes/sec is normal
System is a dual boot Vista and XP.
Under XP i get around 250Mbps (mega bits per second) transfer speeds on the network, swap to Vista and I get 70Mbps max (bits not bytes) which indicates to me that even though the card says it's connected at 1Gb the driver is only letting it transfer at 100Mb.
The problem is the network card driver which appears to be fairly well documented as causing a problem in Vista, so ........ who can vouch for a gigabit network card that works properly under Vista? Anyone? surely somebody!
