Christ, you think thats why BT quote "The limitation is based on line noise, the maximum noise level capable of sustaining a Rate Adaptive IPStream 500 connection correlates to 60dB. As our findings show, this roughly translates into an average distance of 6 Kilometre's from the exchange connection." ?

The "Rate Adaptive IPStream 500" is the product that BTWholesale sell onto your ISP which is based, in this case, on the RADSL technology.

Sorry if I am sounding "bitchy", but I had though we had already covered this.

BT have that on their site as its read by Joe Public and in order for said Joe Public to grasp a general understanding of it they use this rough comparison.... Mr Public has no idea what attenuation is and dont really care but they DO know what distance is so when a line fails for DISTANCE rather than attenuation then most of them understand this.... Try telling Joe Public that his line failed due to too much noise on the line and you'll quickly find yourself trying to explain it and ending up neck high in a quagmire of jargon that the customer has no idea about.....

Hmmm, mebbe working a few years in Tech Support (over the phone) has taught me a few things after all LOL

Actually, that was taken from one of our internal briefings here at BT..

Guess we'll disagree then.... Personally I dont rate results or info from "roughly translated averages" on anything, I prefer a better level of accuracy and definites.

Can only go with what BT throw at you I suppose. We're all under wholesales thumb when it comes to R/ADSL.

The distance quote is there for a reason, true this is possibly to play with statistics for nationwide coverage, but it serves a point none-the-less.

Basically, I'm just trying to say there is reason behind it and not to dismiss it totally.

You are very correct in what you mention about line attenuation. But we mustn't dismiss the official figures, after all I think BTWholesale know more about their general network as a whole than either you or I do. That much is indubitable!

well there is one thing i have learned about bt call centres, its don`t take no for answer, find somebody there who no`s what they are talking about then get`um to send out an engineer. Odd really when you consider BT are in the business of selling phone lines.
