    Home proxy

I'm wanting to run a proxy at home so I can connect to it via work and surf that way. Whats the best way to do this? I run Leopard.

    Re: Home proxy

There is a version of squid that runs under leopard.

This link squid version 2.6.STABLE16 for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard may start you in the write direction.

    Re: Home proxy

most linux servers can be set up to act as a proxy.

just make sure its not an open one.... (ie, you should need a password)

    Re: Home proxy

Hmmmm if you can connect to open ports from work, why do you need a proxy, if you need a proxy to get to your proxy, does that not defeat the object ?
    It is Inevitable.....

    Thumbs up Re: Home proxy

Heres a quick rundown on the method i use.

The proxy/firewall at my work will only allow http connection on port 80 and https connection on port 443.

I run sshd on my linux box at home listening on port 443.

You can connect to sshd on port 443 with putty and its indistinguishable from an https connection.

You can then go into connection -> ssh -> tunnels in putty and set source port to anything i use "1080" leave the destination box empty and set type to dynamic + auto.

Any application that supports socks5 proxys can now use localhost:1080 as a proxy address and tunnel everything through your linux box at home.

I also use the foxyproxy (FoxyProxy) extension for firefox to route certain urls through my home proxy and everything else through the proxy at work.

If you don't have a linux box at home that you can run sshd on port 443 on then you can rent an ssh tunnel proxy from sh3lls.net Proxy Hosting, SSH tunnel, HTTP Proxy, Socks 5 Proxy, Socks Proxy, HTTPS Proxy, SSL Proxy for $5/month.

Not if he is trying to circumvent his company policy on blocked URLs... (not that I am suggesting that is the reason, but that might be a reason - but I'm not sure that would work anyway)

    Re: Home proxy

Also remember, even if using an encrypted tunnel, that dns lookups are still performed locally so the local sysadmins will still know where you're going, they just won't be able to see what you're doing there

If your goal is to surf anonymously whilst at work then you'd be better off just SSHing into your home *nix box with X forwarding and running a remote copy of your web browser at home but forwarded to your local display. That way all dns requests are performed on your home network not on your employers network and the work-home connection is totally encrypted.

    Re: Home proxy

phproxy is a real doddle to use, run a PHP webserver on your home machine and either use dyndns or the IP to get there.

You can mangle the urls so they're not so obvious, and for bonus points use htaccess passwords to stop curious admins from looking at this mysterious site you're spending all your time on.

In Foxyproxy you can set whether you want Firefox to resolve DNS through SOCKS5 or not

I use a combination of stunnel and 3proxy as that way the transfer speed is slightly faster.

Cool. That's a plugin for Firefox, right?
