    Help a noob out!

Just need a bit of advice before I switch from Virgin to Talk Talk.
(as a side note: had no real probs with Virgin, just Talk Talk are offering half the price)

Will I still be able to use my same D-Link wireless router (that I've been using on cable) with the new ADSL modem I'll get from Talk talk?

Wouldn't like to take the plunge & find I got to go out & buy a new router;o)

    cheers

    Virgin to Talk Talk?
Thats the worst possible move I could think of
If the D-Link has an Ethernet WAN port, then yes

    Re: Help a noob out!

Is it twice the price better, that is the question?

Please enlighten me to the pitfalls, if any?

Got till the end of January to decide.

Depends how far you are from a BT exchange. If its over the road then do it if you are a few miles away and are getting 48db loss then your going to be in trouble.

Ok first off , I don't know what 48db means (I had a really bad schooling)

And second, is there any way/test/site that can tell me what I will be getting?

Oh, & thanks for the help by the way ;O)

    Re: Help a noob out!

DSL ZoneUK - Distance to exchange

try that or call Talk Talk and ask, they have to tell you what they expect you to get.

    Re: Help a noob out!

Hey, thanks for the link (isn't the internet great)

You are around 2.88 kilometres from your exchange (as the crow flies)

What do you think, is that good/bad?

    Re: Help a noob out!

if your on ADSL max your will get a max of 2.5Mb/s if your on standard ADSL you will get 1Mb/s

MAX works by giving you the best speed it can at all times so if the line drops to 0.5Mb/s then you get that if it ups to 2.5Mb/s then you get that.

ADSL has a fixed speed. If the line drops to 0.5Mb/s then you will get no internet, it will simply drop the connection if it goes up to 2.5Mb/s then you will still only get 1Mb/s

Its all to do with how many db loss you have on your line.

Call TalkTalk and ask them what they expect you to get.
