    Question Cable router advice....please!!!!

    All,

I'm currently on Virgin 20MB Broadband. Currently using a PC but have just ordered a laptop. It's got an Intel ® PRO/Wireless 4965AGN, IEEE 802.11a+b+g (Mini-card interface) installed and will be running Vista 64bit.

I'll be using both the PC and laptop to access the net.

What router would you guys recommend to take advantage of the card? Should I stick to a 'g' router or go for a 'draft n' one?

I've read good things about the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

    Mahbub

Linksys WRT54GL is the way forward. There's no point going for a draft N router if you only have an 802.11g card in the laptop.

And another - or any WRT54G based router really. Out-of-the-box firmware is fine, but custom firmwares such as DD-WRT make the router extremely powerful.

Also, like burble says - if the laptop card is only "g" then there's not much point getting an "n" router.

Although in the OP it says the card is a Intel ® PRO/Wireless 4965AGN which is N compatible.

So it does, I didn't notice that part.

Personally I'd still go for a WRT54GL (with Tomato firmware would be my preference) over a draft n router.

May be a little over kill for you but the cheaper netgear ones are good too.

So do I go for the Buffalo, Linksys WRT54GL or Netgear WPN824 RangeMax MIMO-G Wireless Cable/DSL Router? Wanna make the most of the card which is N compatible - thanks for highlighting this again Burble.

Personally I'd go for the Linksys.

'N' isn't going to give you the massive increase in range and speed that the manufacturers think it will so I'd prefer to use a router which I know is reliable, and for me that's the WRT54GL.

    Re: Cable router advice....please!!!!

On the other hand, if your surrounding area is already full of 802.11b/g equipment, all operating at 2.4GHz (along with cordless phones, bluetooth and a multitude of other wireless gear), 802.11n operating at 2.5Ghz and 5GHz will make a huge difference.

I'd like to move to N as my G network is pants at the moment, I can't even stream a DVD across my living room. There are at least a dozen HomeHubs in the area that i can pick up. But i'm patiently waiting for the standard to be ratified and then to see if anyone is going to realease a N router or access point that is as versatile and hackable as the WRT54G .

    Re: Cable router advice....please!!!!

Ok guys. After many hours of brain numbing research and suggestions from you guys, I've come to the conclusion that I'm not gonna go Draft N just yet.

So I think it's between the Linksys or the Buffalo Airstation HP WHR-HP-G54. Both are similarly priced. I'm a little confused with the linksys as it's got different models GS/GL?? There's also one with a rangebooster?? Help me burble!! Which one do I need??

So, to end my misery, please could you give me your opinions on the above. Wanna get the best throughput from my 20Mb broadband. Oh by the way, I only live in a 2 bed terraced house so hopefully range won't be an issue with an 802.11g router.

Id go the Linksys of the two but a Netgear Rangemax DG834PN MIMO has worked well for me

    DG834PN - RangeMaxâ„¢ Wireless Modem Router - NETGEAR.com

just to complicate things a bit further

Linksys WRT54G series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GL has 2 antennas, which if you're using wireless I'd recommend. You loose USB ability, but unless you specifically need this, don't worry about it

Your suggestion doesn't complicate things at all, the OP has cable internet and you posted details for an ADSL router
