Ah nuts - my VM box is having issues so it's looking unlikely that I'll get too far with this tonight. I'll see what I can do and update as soon as I have anything.

heh it is a powerful util but you've got to tweak it as it sometimes even causes issues with sites such as hexus and this is dependant on what words are going to be displayed.

Say boobies and this thread gets banned for me here at work...

I'll have a word with the person who deals with this and let you know

The FAQ helped a lot with my test install at home (don't ask!) and the groups are a cracking help as well.

lol - I kinda ran out of free time to finish my build off

It looks like a pet project for a weekend really, though my next free weekend is probably 3 or 4 weeks away.

Re: Content Filtering: Sonicwall, Free Proxy or Other?

Once again I'm late to the party but the following should help others

I've gone for Smoothwall 3.0 with the DansGuardian mod and a few other mods. It's all running on Pentium III (Coppermine), 600 Mhz, 347 Mb RAM and a puny 37.3 Gb HDD

Re: Content Filtering: Sonicwall, Free Proxy or Other?

Apart from a few bugs I have to say Squid / DG is fantastic.

Our tiny little 512k ADSL line used to operate at a crawl but now people know I am watching its running quite well.

If downloading porn is against company policy, and you know who the guilty ones are, start disciplinary proceedings started against them (you may be able to make a case for gross misconduct and therefore instant dismissal - but it depends on the policy) The word will get round and discourage others from following suit.

    Already started

It was a big scalp as well..... oh how good it was to spend £40 on a DL360G1 and fiddle with Linux to get it to run with the hardware RAID.

    Well worth it.

Re: Content Filtering: Sonicwall, Free Proxy or Other?

Glad you founhd a good technical solution anyway - and that Squid is delivering what you hoped! (I suspect you could also use it to filter out adverts, perhaps by intercepting calls to the various adservers and substituting white space - effectively spoofing the ad servers with content of your own.)
