I think this may need a bit more planning to be honest. Its hard to give you propper advice but I would setup a propper domain. 2003 Server with 5 CALs is cheap enough, RAID store and a tape drive. This would give you the base for a fully complient data store for any future contracts.

The most important thing to remember is that RAID is not backup and you should keep duplicate copies of data offsite.

Im pretty hot on backing up my data, having nearly lost my dissertation at uni i always kept 4 copies of my work, all in different places. I have never personally used any kind of RAID array, so i will not be implementing that kind of system. I have already started planning where and how to have an off site backup solution

    Re: Network storage device

I know you have already discounted RAID - but for the sort of environment you seem to be considering, RAID1 would be perfect.

For example, if one disk did fail, then you can either run the other on its own, or rebuild the array without using the backups - perfect if you are only going to run a full backup every week.

Also - as long as it is done at the hardware level, pretty reliable/resilient in the first place.

Why Why Why Why Server 2003?

SBS 2003 R2 is what you want!
It is for networks upto 75 machines!

    Re: Network storage device

Depends if any of their contracts (as Jay has hinted) require security beyond that of SBS I suppose.

    But fair point nonetheless.

    Re: Network storage device

RAID is only 1 safety net!

Backup to tape, hard disk or other means is the 2nd safety net.

What happens if overnight the business burns down? - RAID ain't gonna help you in that situation!

    Re: Network storage device

My suggestion was RAID in combination to another backup solution - like the offsite backups the OP suggested.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a pedant when people don't differentiate between server 2003 and SBS 2003 :-)
