    Netgear Card Stops PC Working

I have tried installing a Netgear FA311 rev A1 networkcard onto an old machine of mine, an ABIT KT7-RAID board. Inserting the card onto the motherboard stops the pc from working, it powers up but no beeps and nothing on the screen. Is this just an incompatible network card or is there some other likely problem. I even tried with an AGP and PCI graphics card with same result?

If it is an incompatibility issue, any suggestions as to what will work with this motherboard??

    Thanks.

Re: Netgear Card Stops PC Working

Doin a quick google and saw major bad reviews from consumers about the card freezing their pcs.

Check you card on amazon.com and see the user reviews.

Best to return it and get a different card.

Re: Netgear Card Stops PC Working

Its not a new card, I took it out of a pc that I upgraded for a friend and they did not want the card. I will look at Amazon anyway. The big question now is what will work with this motherboard. I was even thinking of getting a gigabit card as I am trying to set the pc up as a raid based server.

    Thanks.

Re: Netgear Card Stops PC Working

The Amazon reviews look OK - and Netgear stuff is usually OK. The Abit board you mention looks quite old - and the fact that other cards plugged into the board also stop it working leads me to think that it could be a problem elsewhere. Obvious thought would be the mobo itself - but could be PSU - if it is on its way out, that little bit extra load could be enough - but trying to diagnose these things at long range is difficult.

Standard checks include running memtest 86+ to check that all the memory is working correctly.

IRQ incompatability could be another issue, although even a board that old should happily assign IRQs correctly.

I haven't looked up the specs of that mobo - but if it has onboard Lan - disabling that first might help.

Re: Netgear Card Stops PC Working

I have a netgear switch and it has worked without any problems, hence the reason for thinking the card should match with it. The KT7-Raid does not have a network port. One thing I have established is that you have to install the drivers before the card.... guess what..... Once I get the machine up and running I will try it the right way round. I will also disconnect anything that is not needed to see if it could be a power issue.

    Thanks
