It will only make a difference if you have a problem line. It is essentially a sophisticated filter, which appears to do something with the bell wire, that can be the cause of interference. But if you are getting good speeds on your line, it won't make any difference. If you are close to the exchange, but getting intereference which is reduicing speeds, it will make a difference.

But then, as its only £10 - and fitting it won't do any harm, many people will think its worth a punt, and then claim "it doesn't work" because there was nothing wrong in the first place!

As I recall it just disables the ringwire which you can do yourself.

just open up the master socket and pull out wires 3 and 4, leaving just 2 and 5 connected...

then wander around the house doing the samething in the extension sockets...

yup they are available to buy, I got mine from adsl24.co.uk. Before buying try connecting to the test socket first to see if it makes a difference.

I have been having problems with my line speed slowing and the line sync dropping. I have my I-Plate a week, it seemed to have increased my speeds with the line sync increasing but last night it all went pear shaped and my speeds have dropped. So am unsure it this will actually help.

my uncle works for BT and has done for years.
he told me that a faceplate will give the same speed as using a regular filter. no difference at all.
btw i used to use a 2metre phone cable before the filter and got 4mb. i took away the 2metre phone cable and plugged the filter directly in to the socket and now get 6mb.

Similar story here. If you can't have your router right next to the master socket, the best way to do it is buy a filtered faceplate and a proper STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) RJ11 cable from the likes of ADSL Nation - ordinary phone wire extensions are rubbish at protecting from interference.

It doesn't need to be shielded (harder to terminate and less flexible). Cat5 or Cat5e will do the job just as well.

It doesn't absolutely have to be shielded, no... but depending on how long your run is and what other devices you're running it past it can help. I'd recommend it for anyone whose connection seems particularly unreliable.
