    Internet connection to second PC

Hey. Well, I have Virgin Media broadband. I'm getting a new PC upstairs and need to get that connected to the internet. I already have a router downstairs on the main PC I use for my laptop. So heres the thing, I know I got these options already:

    1. Buy a Wireless Card for the PC upstairs. - But I don't want to because I play games online and don't want to lag.

    2. Run an ethernet cable from the router downstairs, to the PC upstrairs. - But I don't want to because I'd rather not have a load of cable running around my house.

Now, I was wondering if I can somehow run a cable from my Virgin box OUTSIDE, up the side of my house and into my room upstairs. That way everyones happy.

    Is this possible?

I called Virgin and they said they wouldn't do it, plus the guy I was speaking to had no clue what so ever.

    BTW, I have a Netgear WGR614 Cable/DSL 54Mbps Wireless Router.

So anyone done this before and can give me a hand?

    Cheers.

Nope. I've kinda droped the idea and will go with either a wireless card or running an ethernet cable to the PC from the router.

The thing is, I have 20MB broadband, and that router wouldn't max out my connection will? So I might have to buy a new router, then will most likely run a cable to the PC.

So, can anyone reccomend me a decent router that will max out my connection?

Lol, my friend uses that method because he really does hate wireless. The cable goes across his room, out the window, down a floor back into the room under him and plugs into a router in there.

    Hello Sly

Your router can transfer data at 100Mbps via ethernet cable and your broadband is only 20Mbps so it will cope fine, no need to replace it.

Re: Internet connection to second PC

just bung a cable up the wall in a bit of conduit should be fine.

Re: Internet connection to second PC

You can run cable in the way you describe:

    1. Use external grade cable (quite pricy - its what BT use for overhead drop cables) and terminate it on RJ45 sockets at each end. (It is relatively inflexible and wouldn't terminate properly in an RJ45 plug)

    2. Use normal grade cable (solid core) a bit cheaper and can be terminated in an RJ45 plug, more flexible than above.

    3. Use patch (stranded) cable as in 2 and terminate that in RJ45 (or get a length ready terminated)

The disadvantage of 2 and 3 is that the outer covering will degrade over time, so you could run it in conduit - but then it becomes more obtrusive.
