Can ping the outside world but not view it ...

This is such a random problem.

Just setup a network for a friend of mine, he has two computers and a Virgin cable connection.

So I got an old Linksys wired router off eBay for £15, shoved that with their current modem (old Motorola Surfboard SB4200) with ethernet out into the modem ... One of the computers work fine, as well as my laptop, however one of the computers can connect to the network, access local shares, and ping the outside world (google etc.) however it just times out when it tries to access them in IE, Firefox, Safari. What is weirder is if I get the dodgy computer to create an ad-hoc WIFI connection - my laptop will connect to it and can browse the internet perfectly through this dodgy computer :S

The computer is a G5 iMAC, running 10.5.4 ... any ideas? I'm stumped apart from re-installing OSX

the problematic computer can ping the outside world as in.. by ip address? just wondering if dns is working ok

Yeah, it can resolve from google.com etc. to the IP to ping it. :S

If you enter the IP address of the site in the search bar, does that go to the site?

Sounds like something's gone fubar in the DNS, try using openDNS or something similar. Nameservers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. If nothing else it rules it out.

Something I always try when I have problems with the net is to clear the dns.

Open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /flushdns".
Sometimes this can get it back working again.

I have also had issues lately with my internet browser and had to use the above suggestion of using open proxy. Appeared to work but have had more luck with browsing through the new "google chrome". A little buggy but loads pages fast.
