    Windows Xp Home network issues....

    Hello,

I recently installed Xp home on 2 of my computers, both connecting to a router via wireless. Used to have Xp Pro so not used to Home issues. The issue is that I am attempting to share files between the computers, and even though they can see each other when looking in "workgroups" I get the usual access denied error message.

This occurs when computer A attempts to access computer B, and the other way round. I live in a shared house, and I am able to access one of the other guys computers upstairs so I don't think its a router issue.

I have attempted to ping the other computer and get no response. I have turned off the windows firewall, deactivated personal anti-virus, turned on the guest account (as I have read this can be an issue with Home) and still get the same error. I have tried simple file sharing and advanced file sharing, both haven't worked.

I have even got a laptop with Windows xp home on it, which also cannot access any of the computers.

Really am running out of ideas, and looking round other forums / sites people have had the same issue, others have posted ideas to try but never have i seen an issue fixed yet.

    Any advice would be great!!!!!

Re: Windows Xp Home network issues....

As I found out, I needed SP3 to network with a Vista SP1 laptop (both 32 bit).

Be nice to know all the OS of the machines, which are hooked up and working in workgroup etc. and the ones that don't.

If you can't ping other machines, check IP (and perhaps DNS?). Workgroup name?

Like I said before, I have just been through a similar situation here.

They are all on the same OS "Windows xp Home" Edition, and they all have their own IP addresses. Even though they cannot ping each other, they can see each other in the workgroups folder.

I do like your deal about the service packs though - didnt think of that idea. I'll update them all tonight to make sure they are on the same platform version.

Also will read through your link to see if there is something I have missed that you didn't.

Thanks coming your way for the quick response!

    Start off simple.

Check IP address, ie are they all set to 192.168.0.XXX? (I prefer to manually set IP addy for each machine...well I still need to do that on the Vista laptop).

    Check DNS

Check if the router has DHCP enabled.

    Check workgroup names.

Try running the home network wizard and use the cd/diskette thing it generates for each machine that you want to have networked.

Well sadly no access to the router admin as its a shared house... i may try and break into it later though

DNs appears fine... cleared it etc...

If i can get onto the router will check dhcp...

Workgroup names are correct... and they can see each other... just cannot connect lol.

I will give that home network wizard a go also once i get a chance

    Cheers.

The home network wizard sorted out my PC this afternoon. I turned it on when I got home from work and the PC "forgot" about the network. Registry entry must have gotten cleared somehow...no idea but network here is back up

Well - just wanted to update this encase others have problems.
I never actually fixed the issue! Nothing I did allowed my 2 pcs to connect to each other!

In the end I got a copy of xp pro and stuck it on there lol, and now all works fine!
