    LAN messenger/chatting

    hello I am looking for a FREE cross platform (mac, windows) for my LAN so i can chat between all my local computers.....needs to be some sort of a instant messenger with alerts....thanks in advance

    Just run a jabber server on your lan, and some kind of jabber client like google talk, or any of the dozen or so multi-IM proto. clients that are out there.

    Yes, you can install a local jabber daemon. So no external dependency (or potential security) issues.
