    My LAN, need help.

    currently have something that looks like this:

    <DLINK 504 4 port ADSL modem/router>
    | | | |
    <my pc> <my second pc> <dads pc> <8 port 10mbit hub>

    then:
    <8 port 10mbit hub>
    | |
    brothers pc, mums pc

    In a recent power surge the hub died, everything else was fine though. Also my adsl goes down a lot because we are PAST the 3.5km limit to the exchange.
    Eurobell, the local part of telewest, is starting doing cable internet, which works out cheaper than freeserve adsl, so were going to get that.

    How much would the adsl router be worth? any one want to buy it? Or should I keep it and use that for cable instead of getting a normal router?
    I also need another hub/switch, where sells the cheapest 100mbit one?

    ADSL Modem/Router/Firewalls sell for between £75 and £110.00, average price is around £90.00. As for pricing, that's up to you, do you have original box, leads, manual and CD? If so, if I was after one, I'd be willing to pay £50.00 for one in good condition but, as I said, the pricing is up to you.

    I use a Belkin 5 port hub/switch, it's fine, it's that upright design one, you either like the look of it or you don't. Cost me £30.00, as I remember, at Office World of all places. Belkin, Linskys, Netgear, all seem good, I've read good reports on all three makes, check out pricing at the usual suspects

    And I'm not sure if you could use the ADSL router/modem with your proposed cable setup, perhaps somebody else could comment on that, cos I really don't know. Presumably the Cable people supply a modem?

    Yes the cable modem is free with the monthl cost, but they still own the modem. Afaik all cable modems connect to the computers/lan with ethernet so it should work on the uplink port of my router.

    I think ebay had some hubs for £15 but postage is a lot. Ill see if they have cheap routers too...

    Ebuyer would be a good bet, especially if you have a free delivery token... Dabs also do cheap multi-port networking devices in their value range (plus p&p is only £3.50)

    That would be unless you're after some better kit, anyway...
