Vista Network File Sharing problems

I have virgin media internet. Attached to it, is the netgear wireless router they give.
Now i have my desktop pc attached to it via ethernet, and my laptop attached to it via wireless.

I decided to play around with file sharing for the last 2-3 hours and it is doing my head in.
I set them up correctly(i think): i gave them different computer names, but the same network and workgroup names. BOth are on private networks.

When i click on "view computers and devices" i only see the computer name for that PC, not the other PC that should be visible in the network

Can anyone recommend any beginner guides to setting up network and file sharing.
Both are using Vista.

Is your filewall blocking the network discovery or computer browser services?

erm thought that may be the problem so closed AVG on both computers.

Still couldn't find each other on the network.

Have you turned on file sharing in the network settings for vista, and other computer discovery or something like that dont use vista. So cant remeber it exactly

I had the same problem between a Vista and XP box. In the end I opened the box from it's IP address in the Run box.
get the IP address of one of the boxes, then type it in the run or search box as \\192.168.X.X and it should appear. It's a bit of a kludge though.

Not necessarily. I can confirm that I had turned off all firewalls, AV and shared the directories and files - neither machine could see the other.
TBH I'm hoping that W7 is going to fix this for me...

Not to worry I get this all day at work, well I used to.

The common problem people make is just sharing the C:\ and forgetting to share the following Documents and Settings and then your profile, including your desktop thne you can copy from Windows Vista to XP and see the documents or folders being copied to you desktop.
