Exclamation Windows 7 Network Transfer Speed

    Hi All,

I have just got Windows 7 and I am having some issues with the networking.

One of my systems that I use as a file server is using Vista Ultimate 32bit.

My main gaming rig is a dual boot Vista Ultimate x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

They are connected over a gigabit ethernet at a distance of only 2m. (file server 1m to giga switch and 1m to rig)

The problem is that I am having is that I can only get around 10(!)mb/s transfer speed when I use Windows 7.

I have tried standard Windows drivers, mobo CD Drivers and latest drivers (with a mix of various compatibility installations and system restores), all which have exactly the same performance issue. Where as Windows Vista has no problem at all!

Am I missing something or is there a totally hidden way of getting a decent transfer speed!?

I have spent too much time on this already and as you can imagine, it is getting me a bit frustrated!!

Re: Windows 7 Network Transfer Speed

What speed has your NIC connected to the switch at? Is it 1Gbps or has it connected at 10/100 Mbps? You could try manually setting the NIC to connect at 1Gbps. Alternatively you could try disabling IPv6 and see if that helps.

Try disconnecting any slower devices from the switch, power cycle the switch and see if that helps.

There are loads of these threads on this forum alone, i'm sure one of them can help you, try searching the networking forum.

I made a post on my blog here some time ago which lists many of the possible solutions to windows Vista/7 slow network transit.

Re: Windows 7 Network Transfer Speed

Try updating your network card driver to latest one (usually Marvell)? I found that the one that came with Win7 Beta/RC is not very good.

Once updated the driver I had 104MB/s (832Mbps) from Win2008 to Win7 Beta (No jumbo frame). That was a long time ago though.

Re: Windows 7 Network Transfer Speed

I have the extact same issue on my Abit QuadGT board. The network connects at 1gb by transfers are super slow. I've tried several drivers directly from the Realtek site, including recent Win7 ones with no change.

It seems if I set the device to use 100mb full duplex I at least get speeds decent enough to let me stream files - file transfers are still heavily limited though.

    This is 64bit also.

You got another switch you can try? Even if it's a 100mb?

hmm... I think your mobo uses the same Realtek NIC as mine (RTL8110SC?), but I'm getting nearly 90MB/sec transferring big media files to/from my Ubuntu server via Samba. I'm using the standard Win7 x64 driver (version 7.6.820.2009 dated 20/08/2009 according to Device Manager), and I haven't touched the network settings which are still at the installation defaults (apart from setting a static IP).

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but it does at least suggest that the Win7 drivers aren't the issue...

Re: Windows 7 Network Transfer Speed

I understand you are using a switch, try connecting the two systems together without the switch, test how it goes (to eliminate if that switch is the problem).
If it still doesn’t work, make sure you are using a cat5e or cat6 cable, also try replacing the cable connecting the two computers together, since gigabit uses all the 8 wires for transfer if any one wire is not attached properly to the connector your speed would be that of Ethernet.

    I hope this helps,
    Good luck
