And again, bang on 4pm my speeds have gone from like 7.5 to <3mb unstable!!. Had to wait 10 seconds to go back a page, this is pathetic and doing my head in .
Still no reply from virgin media, is there call centre in India still open on a sunday?
Around christmas time my VM started to vary ALOT as well, initially it dropped down to literally 50kB/s d/l for about 2 days, I rang up and had a huge rant at some poor foreign lady and she eventually found out my area (Nottingham) was undergoing line maintenace or some crap so was re-routing through others yadayada thus slow. Well anyway next day I was back upto 20mb and i thought everything was fixed, but no, I'm still getting alot of variation.. it's most noticable from my ping in games where I can be at 40 (my normal) then it'll jump up to 300 and sure enough when I run a speedtest I'll be getting like 1mb/s d/l and then it'll go back to norm. Very annoying!
Hicks, i know this might sound far fecthed but have you tried using a thirdparty DNS server ?.
I am on the 10mb service and are using the OpenDNS server and don't seem to see the issues you have around 4pm......
hey sorry posted this on other virgin media thread but no reply, how do you find out using sam knows how far you are from your 'green box'
cheers
Don't think you can.
Dont know about that tbh, never messed around using a third party DNS service... i honestly should have to do that either really!. May give it a try but will see what i get told when i ring virgin later today, still waiting for reply to email!!.
Thanks for the suggestion though .
Yes we should not have to do this but i've found their DNS servers to respond quicker then the NTL ones.
The reason i bring it up is that you where saying your connection was showing less then <3mb and that the page took ten seconds to load.
That 3 Megabit is more like 384kilobytes per sec * 10 = page size of 3840kb, now i doubt that each time you look at the forum you have to download 3mb of data so this leads me to think that the wasted time is the DNS servers taking time to look up.
There are a few ways of doing it. The first is to change settings on your router (if computers on your network get DNS IP's from the router that is but if you're using defaults they probably do) and another way is to manually change DNS settings on all of your computers. OpenDNS lets you just use their servers without configuring anything or you can make an account to change settings.
Since routers have different interfaces I can't walk you through without knowing what router you're using but anyway you'll need to change the primary and secondary DNS IP address from automatic to the following: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 or if you want to do it on your computer open Network and Sharing Center and click on local area connection (or whatever your connection is called if you've changed it's name from default) then click properties on the new window. Now click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) in the list and click properties. Select the Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the IP addresses I posted above.
Hope this helps.
you guys are lucky to be getting slow speeds honestly.
I can't get online what so ever with my 50Mb virgin connection
and that don't look like its is going to change until 27th when the repair is due to happen
again for the past 2 months my connection have been intermittent until tuesday
gone when I lost my connection totally
I have complained at every level and still nothing is going to happen till the 27th
I am now using my mobile as a modem and using my contract phones unlimited connection
as its the only way I can get online
I've updated my dns servers but no joy with that. Waiting for the account holder ie my housemate to get back from his work trip so we can get in touch with virgin - I'm getting fed up of dial up speeds on the web.
The first thing they're likely to say is 'have you reset the router/modem' so if you haven't already do it before calling them and say you've done it.
