Re: Virgin media incredibly poor speeds, way to prove it?

I was wondering if people could also post there pingtest.net results, it seems Virgin is over subscribing and in the evenings gamers are punished with high pings and laggy connections.

Here is my ping test, at 4ish in the afternoon all is fine, then in the evening.

My download of 50mb is never above 30mb, so im losing an entire package worth, on 20mb i never got below 17mb.

Wow I'm getting some awful speeds myself now:

Upload is fine but DNS is really slow...

    Compared to normal speed:

watercooled your pings are below 50ms which means the virgin media gods are shining down on you, don't complain

Ping wasn't that bad but DNS resolution time was horrible...

Re: Virgin media incredibly poor speeds, way to prove it?

I thought I was going mad till I saw this thread. Like many others a speed test would show 9mb (got 10 mb connection), then it would be 7,6,3 and back to 9mb. I did call the tech lot and they tested my modem and said all was ok. If i test the speed and get say 3mb after switching off the modem and router, and then reconnecting them speed is 9mb again.

It's probably just due to VM massively oversubscribing and when people get home from work/school it ruins everyone's connection.

Isnt that true of all ISPs?

The fact you buy a 10/20/50 package only means your connection to their network is 10/20/50 etc. They might have a 14.4 modem connecting everyone to the net. You have no control other than choice of provider.

Eg I'm with demon business. At weekend I get 'speedtests' of about 400-500k/s. About 200 on weedays and about 100 at 'peak' time, which appears to be 3-6pm.

Your only option is to move.

Not all ISPs. A lot of the higher-rated LLU providers guarantee not to over subscribe and they state their maximum contention ratio.

What a load of bull. 100% bull.

All isps oversell their bandwidth. Hence why costs for guarnteed bandwidth are so high.

In terms of 'over subscription'. That is impossible to define.

Actually it's not - firstly going against the contract would be illegal and secondly I know plenty of people on good LLU ISPs whi never experience slowdowns...
But yeah you're right - over subscription has no true definition.

But the contract is to supply something from their equipment to you. Nothing abouther their end into the 'internet'.

I spoke with OFCOM about a year ago as I was having huge grief with my phone line. The broadband definition is so open proving it's faster than a modem you have no comeback, infact the chap was happy to define ISDN as 'broadband'. OUCH.

Backing up what I originally said: From https://www.bethere.co.uk/web/beportal/realworldspeed:
Our network runs on a contention ratio of 1:1 so you are never sharing your bandwidth with another Member. This means you get a consistent speed in the real world no matter when you are using the internet or what you are using it for.
Can't be "100% bull" because that would be false advertising and illegal...

Re: Virgin media incredibly poor speeds, way to prove it?

just had 20mb cable installed a couple of hours ago. ran first speed test as soon as line was up and running and got 18mb. ran it again straight after and got 17mb. i was very impressed.

10 minutes later i ran another test and got 9mb. i was hovering around 7mb for a while then dropped below 5mb for some time. did a test literally 5 minutes ago and got 10mb. just done another one whilst writing this message and got 5mb.

the inconsistency is unacceptable. im yet to get above 11mb since when i first turned on the modem and did my first test. might aswell be paying for the 10mb service at this rate.
