    Recommend me a router...

    I have a rather old Netgear FVS114. Its a 4 port 10/100 router.

I want to upgrade to something that does the same job - it sits between my cable modem and my LAN. I'd like something the can handle gigabit, and it would be nice to have more ports too.

Wifi is not at all needed, but no problems if it comes with it. Problem for wifi is that it would sit under a desk in my office, not a good location for Wifi at all.

    TIA.

    Re: Recommend me a router...

Most routers have only 4 ports. If you are happy with the router, then why not get a 8/16 port gigabit switch and put that between your router and your pcs.

Yeah, I'd thought of that, but my router is pretty dated, and the firmware is buggy. I have to reboot it pretty frequently, and the firewall often gets false-positives, and then it decides to freeze.

So, recommend me a good 4 port router as above!

Maybe I'll just stick another 4 port switch on top of that.

Draytek 2820 series or 2710 series. the 2710 has slightly fewer features, but the additional ones on the 2820 would probably be of little benefit in a home network environment.

the 2800 series only has one 10/100/1000 port the other three are 10/100. TBH the gigabit port is asn't much use if the router is being used as an ADSL modem (the speed will be limited by the connection. It may be useful if you use the router as just a router as it has a second wan port that is idependent of the ADSL modem side, so you could use it on a cable connected set up or (to really utilese the speed) a point to point set up.

For S)OHO I think the 2710 is probably OK (although the 2820 looks good! - and is rack mountable)

I use the Draytek 2820Vn with a Gigabit switch (Zyxel GS108B)
Works great, used to get plent of drops from by netgeart Dg834Gt
After a while, the heat causes the netgear and such like to fail

    How about something like this:

    http://www.overstock.com/Electronics...tml?cid=133635

I know the wireless isn't needed, but it may come in useful one day.
Also this has a built-in USB file / print server.

    Hope this helps!

    Re: Recommend me a router...

Thanks for the ideas, I'll take a look, and probably come back with more questions!

And to be clear, I'm not looking for an ADSL router (I use cable), so something with an uplink WAN port than can handle 100mbit is fine, but I'd like that LAN side to be all gigabit.

    Re: Recommend me a router...

I have a Netgear WNR2000, which ASFAIK is the non-gigabit version of the WNR3500. 'tis a good router. A very fussy friend of mine has just bought a WNR3500 and is happy with it. My router appears to be stable, I vary rarely have to restart it, and generally when I do it turns out not to be the issue.

TBH the gigabit port is asn't much use if the router is being used as an ADSL modem
This surely depends on whether you move any data around on your LAN.

    Re: Recommend me a router...

I agree that gigabit is pointless on the WAN port, however I don't think any "Home" routers currently have gigabit on the WAN side, however, the LAN side will benefit from the gigabit, as would transferring data wirelessly over 802.11n

    Re: Recommend me a router...

No indeed, gigabit would be pointless on the WAN side, and only add to the cost.

100 mbit is fine for WAN, and gives room to support the current range of provider services. What I'm looking for is gbit on the LAN side, precisely for moving data around the LAN.

pipTheGeek, what's your opinion of the WNR2000's wifi capability?

I've used Netgear kit exclusively for a while, but I hear good things about Linksys too.
