My adsl stat's - are they ok?

Hi guys, having only been on dsl for a while i was wondering if these look ok?

I only ask because I pay for up to 20mb but only receive just over 3mb ive been told that this is due to distance from the exchange but for a while the router was synching at 4mb so i was wondering if someone who knows could tell me if any of these are too high / low etc and tips on maybe synching a bit higher?

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream

Connection Speed 3071 kbps 686 kbps

Line Attenuation 55.0 db 31.3 db

Noise Margin 8.6 db 9.0 db

    thanx guys!

Re: My adsl stat's - are they ok?

Due to your line, your downstream isn't really any better than it would be with a ADSLMax (up to 8mbit) connection. However, that would max your upstream at about 440kbps, so you are getting some benefit from the ADSL2+ connection.

55.0 Db attenuation is very high, but yeah that is down to you're distance from the exchange usually if it isn't a line issue.

Sometimes just powering your router off then on will reset the sync speed. I usually find doing this before 6pm gives me the best speeds. (Don't know if this is a coincidence.)

Re: My adsl stat's - are they ok?

How far are you away from the exchange? What does the BT site say you can get on ADSL upto 8meg max - http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome ?

Rebooting you're router might help a bit and it's certainly worth a try.

A quote from another forum that may be useful:

    "as a guide

    attenuation
60db + 512kbps or possibly 1Mb which may require a engineers visit but this high is a problem and will prob be 512kbps
    50db 2-3mb
40db and below 3db plus up to around a max on ADSL Max 8Mb of a true figure approx 7Mb + when the attenuation is 20db odd."

Sync speed is always higher than the actual download spoeed (because of transmission overheads)

The line stats are what they are for your line. Assuming that you don't have any problems with internal wiring in the house, there isn't a lot you can do to improve your line attenuation - apart from shortening the line by moving closer to the exchange. Hoever, it isn't the absolute distance from the exchange that matters, it is the length of the cable run from the exchange to your house that is important.

Re: My adsl stat's - are they ok?

Yep, there isn't anything you can do if it the wiring is sound other than move closer to the exchange..somehow I am 1.2 miles from the exchange and get these stats:

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.0 db 17.0 db
Noise Margin 9.2 db 26.0 db

Sorry for the thread hyjack but it has gotten my interested in improvements I can get in the future on ADSL.

BT Wholesale WBC has set an enablement date of March 2011 for the x exchange
BT have set a target date of Q1 2010 for the switch to 21CN for the x exchange

When exactly is Q1 this year - first quarter? So by March...21CN? is that upto 24Mbit?

Oh maybe not, might have to wait till 03/11 to get better speeds if the 21CN thing is the same kind of thing as upto 8Mbit.

You're in luck! 21CN is up to 24Mb. I guess it should be enabled fairly soon if its Q1

Re: My adsl stat's - are they ok?

That's what I thought originally but googling about it, 21CN is just an IP Stream thing that is the same as upto 8Mbit like I have now?

    Quote from Sam Knows:

    "21CN product structure
IPStream Connect - A 21CN variant of the existing IPStream product, with all of the same options and pricing.
Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) - The new broadband product offers up to 24Mbps ADSL2+, QoS and considerably more flexibility for ISPs. In addition to WBC, there also exists WBMC (Wholesale Broadband Managed Connect) and WBCC (Wholesale Broadband Connect Converge).
    IPStream Connect
There isn't much to say about IPStream Connect (the 21CN variant of IPStream). It uses the same backend infrastructure as the WBC products (including the MSIL), and therefore allows ISPs to maintain the newer WBC connections and the older IPStream connections on one product from BT. Aside from this backend change, the same product set will be available as on the existing IPStream lineup. The launch of IPStream Connect has been pushed back to Summer 2008 now, due to problems found in testing.

    Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC)
The vanilla WBC product is the most flexible of the three. Crudely speaking, it is not that dissimilar to DataStream. But rather than having to rent capacity at every exchange from BT, the ISP has to install equipment ("have presence") at BT's WBC Aggregation Points (APs). There are twenty of these dotted around the country, and these are the same as the Core nodes discussed on the 21CN overview. One aggregation point will cover a region of the country, so an ISP would need to have presence at all twenty to cover the entire of the UK."

Re: My adsl stat's - are they ok?

I live in litterally the middle of no where in Devon!! in a hamlet which forms part of a small (population wise) Parish but covers a lot of area but I am about a mile from the exchange so I could probably get a fairly decent sync rate if I can get better than this 8mbit. Will see if others have had their exchange 21CN enabled recently without the WBC bit like mine is meant to have soon, according to Sam Knows.

Depends n the length of the telephone line. It may not be in a straight line and could exceed 2 miles. It also depends on the line condition.

Re: My adsl stat's - are they ok?

Yeah its mostly down to line length at the end of the day. The distance by road or as the crow flies is often very much shorter than the 'actual' line length.

When was you're exchanged 21CN enabled? Do you know if that means you can get upto 24Mbit broadband ADSL? or is upto 24Mbit the WBC thing? as I am clueless as to the ins and outs of this as it were.

You're exchange serves a LOT of people by the looks of it, at least compared to my one:

    Yours:

    Serves (approx): 30,121 residential premises
    1,119 non-residential premises.

    Mine:

    Serves (approx): 418 residential premises
    21 non-residential premises.

Quite a difference but I doubt the amount of people on the exchange would effect your sync rate as a higher capacity exchange should have the equipment to deal with such?
