2 shops, how to get computers talking?

Mate has a shop and he is going to be opening another shop later in the year in a town about 10 miles from the current shop. What needs to be done so that both shops have access to the realtime inventory list, customer database etc? As usual, he wants to spend as little money as possible and yours truely will get roped in to setting it up ..... cheers!

Do a bit of research into site-to-site VPNs, you can set up a VPN tunnel between the two locations so computers on one network can 'see' computers on the other as if they were on the same LAN. Configuration would be different depending on what hardware/software you were using but have a read through this guide for m0n0wall, it should give you some insight into what needs doing. Depending on how large the business is and how much VPN traffic there's likely to be, something like m0n0wall might be a very good choice - install it on a computer at either end and use that as the router.

^^ Never used it, but the Draytek solution was the first thing I thought of as well.

Should be relatively easy to set up, all you need is ADSL in both premises and you will need a router in each anyway, so this saves having separate boxes to manage. I believe that once it is set up, both networks appear to be one and the same.

    And here is an overview!

cheers, the draytek solution looks like the easiest to implement, what model of router should I be looking at - 2820?

Drayteks at both sites would be my recommendation. Ronseal solution that is pretty cheap to implement.

I actually didn't think about using Drayteks but they should be ideal, +1.

You need to know how the software they're using works before you decide on a solution.....
