No, ADSL doesn't work over fibre, they are completely different technologies.
If you have ADSL you have a normal phone line.

Cable isn't fibre to the houses either, it's coaxial cable into the houses and then down to the distribution point where it then goes into a media convertor. It then changes to fibre when there are enough connections to warrant the fibre capacity, usually not until there are several streets worth of connections.

ADSLs modulation technique could be applied to any transmission system.

All ADSL is, is basically a inverse fourier transform. (haha i say basically but...)
The Idea for it has been around for decades but only recently have DSPs been powerful enough/cheap to do the transforms.

Adsl is a signal transmission system used for the last stage of the distance between you and your isp.

Other words the LLU to your house. Its then converted to a light based transmission until it hits the other LLU at your isp. Then it can be many different form depending on the size of the isp.

So ADSL does in part use fibre optic cable to transfer your requests, their isn't enough capacity in normal copper lines for a full point to point copper system.

Does anyone know what transmission system CABLE use for the LLU to home ? Fibre only stops in your street like BT. BT just stops the fibre that bit sooner.

ok why not just go the all the way and put fibre into the house it will future proof telco cable , video and net for the next 50 years or more.

Cause BT wanted to do this years ago but Thatcher decided not to get it done to save money and, partly because of this, we are no in the dark ages of telecomms

fibre to desktop is only a recent invention, a more realistic means is cable to street a la cable.
It's also favoured by many of the BT Engineers I've had here as it'd cut down most of their callouts does to dodgy cables etc..

    We can but hope..

I see on the computer shoppers site a news item from BT giving out the Bull again and nobody seem s to care at Ofcom. The last few lines must have been added by the computer shopper team! Cut & paste below.
My own comments are will you stop telling PORKIES BT and put in some new cables end of story.

ADSL broadband is now available for 90 per cent of UK homes and businesses, BT has announced.
Twenty-two exchanges are being upgraded today to achieve what the company calls a 'significant milestone on the way to universal broadband availability'.

BT expects 99.6 per cent coverage by the summer of 2005, three years after the launch of its registration scheme and five years since the first 400 exchanges - serving 26 per cent of homes and businesses were enabled in April 2000.

BT Wholesale chief executive Paul Reynolds said, 'Our pioneering approach to broadband rollout has been widely recognised, most recently with the OECD rural broadband report putting Britain ahead of the pack for broadband availability compared to the other G7 nations.

'BT has put the UK at 90 per cent ADSL coverage today with our closest competitor countries in the G7 aiming for this level by the end of 2004,' he added.

On the downside, the majority of these exchanges will only be able to offer services at 512Kbps and lower, with 50:1 contention ratios. It is arguable that this alone will not provide sufficient infrastructure for the level of broadband demand in the near future, never mind five or ten years' time.

ive been on isdn for the last 5/6 years, it definatly beats 56k (until you see your BT bill), i have 2 sets of isdn lines for numerous reasons, one is home highway, one business, both identical with speed etc, one costs me £45 a quarter (exc dialup costs etc) and one costs £125 a quarter. then add £30 a month for the dialup access, comes to something like £260 a quarter. equivalent adsl costs are something like £60 a quarter, yet 8-10x the price and more reliable :/
to put it one way, owned by isdn :<
thankfull DSL has finally been given an activation date for my exchange, 29 days and counting but yeah, small village totally overlooked for cable, and my only option is 512k as im too far away for anything better.
richie your right though, several friends with NTL on 600k, each with a totally different experiance. from what i seem to have learnt it seems that a BT / NTL etc tend to be good service, but as soon as there is a problem, your problems begin and wont end.

people do tend to slag off BT etc for not keeping up, bad service and such. id love to see you try and run a countries phone network :/

er, if your northbridge fan is humming loudly, disconnect it. _dont_ kick the side of the case, it _will_ break it.

BT have the resources and knowledge to do it properly, but they would rather line their own pockets than invest in the network.

BT suffers from empire-building, different departments doing their own thing and refusing to deal with problems, for example one of the engineers spent 90 minutes trying to get someone to monitor my connection before he gave up because they just didn't want to know.

Oh by the way, my fault is apparently unresolvable.
They said they could put in a new line, but they wouldn't guarantee any connection on it other than a normal telephone line, and if the new line wouldn't support broadband it was effectively my tough luck.

The solution.. Lump it or have no broadband at all..

    Fantastic :/

BT made £2.2 Billion in profit, surely thay can afford to actually invest some decent money in it.

If You were to work it out not having a high speed network across the country (and one that really works at high speeds not the the type BT supply) for everybody to use for work or play, i should say that the cost to UK PLC would be 100 X more then BT `s yearly profits so why should UK Plc have to depend on a private company ( So the Govement claims ) to supply something its not interested in.
Probably the same reason why we have to pay so much in Tax.
