    Dns

Can you create a primary zone with a subdomain? For example, set "subdomain.example.com" as your primary zone.

    Thanks

    Re: Dns

Isn't "subdomain" as you're calling it just a DNS record?

Yes even if your terms are wrong. If you own example.com you can have an.example.com and me.an.example.com and give.me.an.example.com. As you DNS as multiple types of record, you can have example.com using an "A" record pointing to a real machine telnet example.com would go to that machine, and "MX" record pointing to a different machine so fred@example.com would go to a mail server ALSO .example.com can be an origin for another sub domain, you can see this with www.example.com and example.com pointing at the same machine. You can also have "wild cards" so all machines are matched no matter what they type. damn.example.com could point though the wild card to www.example.com.

People don't seem to use sub domains much these days, I blaim Microsoft as active directory normally gets setup with a flat structure, so everything hangs off the first domain, but there is no reason you can't has as many levels as you need. As there is a recursive lookup system. Another use of subdomaining is someone bought uk.com and sells third level domains from that even though its just another .com address no different from naff.com.

Just into the mix people often use the same domain name and have different internal and external DNS systems, the inside one having many more records for non public address machines. Some people believe you should use .local for internal machines.

    Re: Dns

    very good answer that one.

Although you can use .com etc for internal domain if you want, its not a big issue. if you are going to use a .com then this is where it is good to have your internal network on a my.domainname.com. I do like to use .local though

Thanks for the detailed answers guys. I wanted to double check I could do that before configuring DNS.
