    Draytek - talk to me....

Getting rather irritated with my current router, so i've started looking around at replacements. Draytek seems to be one of the ones highly recommended?

Currently I've got BeThere internet, getting pretty much the full 24mb and 1.3 ish up. The bottleneck seems to be the rather underpowered Thomson Speedtouch Modem/Router - or am I missing something?

So, in terms of what the router needs - it is fairly simple - doesn't even need wireless (going to integrate that in elsewhere) - just to plug into the phone line, do the modem & routing part - then the rest of my network takes over :

Modem/Router - 3com Baseline 2250/Linksys SRW2024P (not quite sure which way I'll hook them up yet) - to the rest of the network.

So as far as I can work out I'd be fine with a basic Draytek - but the one thing that did concern me is the specs for the older ADSL2+ items have a max of 1mb upstream - is that a definite limit or was that just what was expected to be the limit when the tech was released?

So, knowledgeable Hexites - which models should I be looking at, and which ones should I avoid? Oh, and if anyone has any other brands to suggest which I've missed, I'll happily consider them

I have had a 2820 on 100/100 line before now and got 60 down and 40 up. At the moment my 2820 is synced with 1.3mbps up.

If your tight on the money then look at the Draytek 2700 range - same kit nearly, just a bit cut down on comparison to the 2820 series.

Otherwise, take the advice of others and get the 2820!

Re: Draytek - talk to me....

2820 is the right one to go for if you want an all-in-one solution, i'm looking at one for myself too actually Thats if I don't go for the below option.

Alternatively (and this is something else i'm considering) you could go for a separate system - get the Vigor 120 ADSL2+ modem, and pick up a Cisco 2620 for £30 off ebay..and maybe a 2950 switch if you need a good switch too (about £20 for a 24 port). You can remove the fans that they come with for low volumes of traffic, its not like you are running a corporate lan off it. Sadly the cisco WIC-1 cards don't support adsl2+ and their replacements are £300+ (HWIC), so you can't go *all* cisco without spending silly money.

Total cost is about the same but enterprise level kit..and you just know that playing with IOS is fun (thats the real IOS, not Apples version ). You do need more space though, but not really a rack (I ran them on top of each other last year, didn't do them any harm )

I found the 2820 gets better sync and is more stable that the 120. I have also killed 2 120s in the last 12 months

Just here to throw in another vote for the Draytek 2820n. I own one and though it's a little pricey it's been nothing but rock solid stable and everything I could ask for. Although it's definitely not for the technically inexperienced but should be fine for anyone using hexus!

Or you could go the cheaper route and get a ASUS RT-N16 I've used it for a few weeks now on O2 and it has NEVER droped out on me once, ping is good in games and it has a fancy bandwitdh limit thing! mind you...it's no Draytek XD so if you have money to burn...

Re: Draytek - talk to me....

there're pretty easy really.... if I can get games, Wii servers and the like running on them, most people can.

Unlike the Million router I owned... my word... that menu/option/setup was like a jungle !!
